Job description

Looking for a new legal role within Casualty / Personal Injury that will have a meaningful impact on the clients we work with?

We are searching for either a Solicitor or an Associate Solicitor to join our Markel Law team !

What part will you play? If you’re looking for a place where you can make a meaningful difference, you’ve found it. The work we do at Markel gives people the confidence to move forward and seize opportunities, and you’ll find your fit amongst our global community of optimists and problem-solvers. We’re always pushing each other to go further because we believe that when we realise our potential, we can help others reach theirs.

Join us and play your part in something special!

The opportunity :

Markel Law LLP a law firm, independently authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. We handle a broad range of legal services for Markel policyholders, associations and leading businesses across a range of sectors. Our teams are spread across offices in Manchester, Leeds, London and Croydon, employing over 60 lawyers. We are recognised as leading experts across commercial, civil, personal injury, employment and regulatory law often handling complex, high value claims and disputes with a unique focus on commerciality and client outcomes rather than profit.

At Markel we hold the individual's right to self-determination in the highest light, providing an atmosphere in which people can reach their personal potential. The Markel approach is one of spontaneity and flexibility. We have the ability to make decisions or change course quickly unlike other large law firms. Our goal is to deliver legal services in line with the Markel Style.

Part of Markel Group (NYSE – MKL) a Fortune 500 company with over 60 offices in 20+ countries, is a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, specialist advisory, and investment operations around the world.

We are looking for a casualty solicitor (2-6 years PQE) to join our Casualty team in Leeds. At present, the dedicated team comprises of a Partner, 2 Senior Associates, Associate, Solicitor, 2 Trainees and 2 Paralegals.

As a Solicitor / Associate in our Casualty team at Markel Law, you’ll manage a diverse and varied caseload, providing defendant work to insurers on a wide variety of disputes, including those relating to employers liability and public liability within the social care, equine and construction sectors. You’ll support the Head of Department in supervising / delegating to junior team members, subject to relevant experience and achieving departmental goals.

The role involves working on a mixed case load of fast track, intermediate and multi-track work primarily on cases funded under legal expenses insurance policies.

What you’ll be doing :

Provide advice to insurers on a wide variety of Employers Liability and Public Liability matters

Be expected to manage a case load of their own, including recommending reserves and setting strategies under the supervision of a Partner / Senior Associate

Support the Head of Department with the supervision of paralegals, and in achieving the strategic aims of the department. Achieving the department’s fee targets and assisting and enabling others to do so by assisting in the development of junior members of the team

Set and deliver objectives personally and through the team. Set team objectives in conjunction with Head of Department, monitor performance and progress and provide professional guidance to team members as appropriate

Have a mixed case load fast, intermediate and multi-track EL / PL defendant work

Embrace the challenge of expanding their knowledge into new areas of law

Deliver clear, accurate and pragmatic advice based on both the legal and commercial realities of a client’s position

Provide our clients with an efficient and courteous service at all times

Be expected to deliver on billing and other key performance indicators

Ensure all files are progressed and maintained within required standards and in line with relevant procedures

Have the opportunity to develop their understanding of the insurance industry, by undertaking additional qualifications, and the contribution an insurance panel law firm can make to the success of a large insurance company

Our must haves :

Have existing defendant personal injury litigation experience in both EL / PL and professional liability claims

Experience in clinical negligence, Animals Act 1971 and policy coverage would be ideal, although not essential

Have a thorough understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules

Be accustomed to running their own caseload under appropriate supervision

Demonstrate strong communication and organisational skills with an ability to prioritise workload

Have good IT skills, certainly with experience in using Microsoft Office 2010 and case management systems (preferably Partner for Windows)

Be able to work under pressure

Deliver against tight deadlines and display key time management skills when prioritising tasks to ensure compliance with deadlines

Have high attention to detail and accuracy in their work

Demonstrate first-class client care and communication skills across all levels

Demonstrate an ability to develop relationships with key internal and external stakeholders

Have excellent written communication skills

Be an effective team player, demonstrating a positive ‘can do’ attitude and displaying co-operative interaction with team members
