Job description

Teaching Assistant (SEN Support)

Primary Schools Merton Long-Term &; Flexible Supply September 2026 Starts Local Opportunities

Are you passionate about supporting children and helping them thrive in a primary school environment?

We are looking for caring, patient and dedicated Teaching Assistants to support primary-aged pupils across Merton and the surrounding South West London area.

These opportunities are ideal for experienced SEN professionals, recent graduates, or individuals looking to begin a rewarding career in SEND, with a range of long-term, flexible and ongoing opportunities available from September 2026.

The Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will provide personalised support to an individual pupil or within the wider classroom, helping children to access the curriculum, develop independence, build confidence and enjoy a positive experience of school.

You may be supporting pupils with a range of additional needs, including autism, ADHD, speech and language needs, social and emotional needs, or other learning and developmental differences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 or small-group support throughout the school day
  • Helping pupils access lessons, activities and the wider school environment
  • Supporting communication, emotional regulation and positive behaviour
  • Encouraging independence, confidence and social development
  • Supporting pupils through transitions and changes in routine
  • Adapting activities and approaches to meet individual needs
  • Working closely with class teachers, SENCOs, therapists and families
  • Supporting pupils to engage positively with their peers and the wider school community
  • Providing personal care support where required
  • Creating a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment where every child can thrive

The Ideal Candidate

We’re looking for someone who is patient, compassionate, reliable and adaptable, with a genuine passion for helping children thrive in a mainstream primary setting.

Previous experience in SEND, education, care, youth work, psychology or a similar environment is desirable, but experience is not essential for every role.

Most importantly, you’ll have a positive attitude, a willingness to learn and a commitment to making a meaningful difference to a child’s education and development.

Whether you are an experienced Teaching Assistant looking for your next opportunity in Merton, a recent graduate looking to gain valuable school-based experience, or considering a career in SEND, we would love to hear from you.

Why Work Locally in Merton?

  • Opportunities across SW London primary schools
  • Long-term and flexible roles to suit different circumstances
  • Supportive school environments and experienced SEN teams
  • Opportunities to develop your SEND experience and career
  • Competitive rates of pay
  • Local placements across Wimbledon, Mitcham, Morden, Raynes Park, Colliers Wood and surrounding areas

Apply Today

If you’re passionate about supporting children with additional needs and want to make a genuine difference within a Merton primary school, we’d love to hear from you.

Get in touch today to discuss available September 2026 opportunities and find your next Teaching Assistant role in Merton.

We have a policy to respond to all applications within three working days. However, because of the volume of applications, we are sometimes unable to reply to individual enquiries.
