Job description

About Us

As part of the CUP&A family, we operate Machine Learning (AI) research from the Cambridge University Institute for Automated Language Teaching and Assessment (ALTA) to provide automated assessment capabilities (automarking and automated feedback) for extended English learner text and speech. ALTA is a virtual institute which investigates new ways of using technology to enhance language learning and to develop cutting-edge approaches to assessment and feedback which will benefit English learners and teachers worldwide. These capabilities can be accessed through ELiT's APIs by CUP&A’s learning and assessment products.

We are a remote, agile team consisting of 24 software engineers and an engineering manager, a senior data scientist, a product owner, a technical architect, and a data annotation and EFL product specialist. We build and maintain ground-breaking English Language Learning applications that are used by hundreds of thousands of learners and teachers worldwide, and our automated language assessment technology delivers exam results to candidates without delay. Our innovative annotation tool is used to enrich learner data and improve the performance of our machine learning pipeline and our products.

The Role

As a core member of our software development team, you will:

  • Help develop ELiT's system of services, single-page applications, data warehouse and analytics pipeline.
  • Write high-quality code that is well designed, peer reviewed, and thoroughly tested and documented.
  • Provision AWS infrastructure, deploying services and monitoring them in production using CI/CD in a DevOps environment.
  • Work in a collaborative and inclusive agile environment and help to improve our processes.
  • Collaborate with leading researchers at Cambridge university to harness the power of their NLP and Machine Learning research and provide data and tools to support future research.

We have a mature and progressive approach to software engineering and working with technology in general. We embrace principles and processes that help us deliver quality software, including automated testing, continuous integration and delivery, automated deployment and support. Our ways of working are always evolving; if something's not working, we change it.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for experienced, enthusiastic Software Engineers. While experience working with some of our technologies would be ideal, your potential, enthusiasm and your willingness to learn is more important.

What we're looking for

  • Commercial Software Engineering experience
  • Prior experience with functional programming languages, not necessarily in a commercial setting
  • A desire to help English language learners worldwide

Nice to have

  • Commercial Clojure experience.
  • Experience provisioning and managing infrastructure on AWS, especially using Terraform
  • Knowledge of SQL, and experience with PostgreSQL and MySQL databases

Benefits

  • Flexible working
  • 35 hours a week
  • Working from home budget
  • Relocation package option available
  • Meal vouchers
  • Medical insurance
  • Remote working
  • 28 days holiday (plus bank holidays)
  • Learning budget
  • 10% time: every other Wednesday is spent learning something new! Whether that's getting your AWS certification or learning Haskell, we'll support you 🙌
