About the School

This opportunity is based at a specialist SEMH-focused school in Scunthorpe, supporting pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs, often alongside autism, ADHD, or trauma-related difficulties.

The school supports children who may have struggled in mainstream education due to challenging behaviour, emotional dysregulation, or adverse childhood experiences. The approach is restorative, relational, and trauma-informed, with a strong emphasis on consistency, trust, and emotional safety.

Small class sizes and high staff-to-pupil ratios allow for personalised support and relationship-based learning.

The Role

As a SEN Teaching Assistant (SEMH), you will support pupils with emotional and behavioural challenges, helping them regulate emotions, engage in learning, and develop positive coping strategies.

You will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to implement behaviour support plans and provide consistent emotional guidance throughout the school day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small group SEMH support

  • Implement behaviour and emotional regulation strategies

  • Support pupils during crises and dysregulated moments

  • Promote positive relationships and self-esteem

  • Assist with learning activities and engagement

  • Record behaviour and progress accurately

  • Support pupils during transitions and unstructured times

  • Maintain safeguarding and wellbeing standards

Person Specification

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience supporting SEMH or behaviour needs

  • Be calm, resilient, and emotionally intelligent

  • Understand trauma-informed practice

  • Have strong boundaries and consistency

  • Work well within a multidisciplinary team

Professional Development & Support

  • SEMH and behaviour management training

  • Trauma-informed practice workshops

  • Ongoing mentoring and supervision

  • Progression opportunities within SEN

Safeguarding Statement

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Enhanced DBS required.
