Job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. The role:

Role Overview

An opportunity has arisen for a vacancy within PICU for a Band 2 HCSW. The successful candidate will work as part of the multi – disciplinary team. PICU is a 22-bedded unit caring for a variety of patients including emergency and elective surgery, cardiac services, orthopaedics, trauma, general medical, oncology, ENT, neurology and neurosurgery and plastic surgery with responsibility for lead service provision throughout Scotland, and referrals from other centres and Europe.

This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a or a NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is unable to provide candidates or employees with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

This is a permanent post of 37 hours per week.

The location is the Royal Hospital for Children and the shift patterns are between 0730-2000 and 1930-0800.

Key responsibilities:

  • Carry out assigned tasks in delivering and supporting direct patient care under the direction of a registered nurse to ensure delivery of a high quality of patient care.
  • Co-operate with and maintain good relationships with other disciplines that are attending and treating patients to maximise patient care.
  • Maintain good relationships and an empathic approach to patients’ carers and relatives and refer them to a trained nurse for any questions they may have on the patients’ condition or for any suggestions or complaints that they wish to raise.
  • Report observed changes in the patients’ physical/psychological needs and participate in maintaining accurate and up-to-date records to ensure effective communication.
  • Work within organisational policies and procedures to ensure maintenance of safe working practices for patients and colleagues.
  • Adhere to ward and organisational procedures for the use of supplies and equipment in order to promote the effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Maintain stock levels of all supplies and carry out housekeeping duties, to support the smooth running of the ward area.
  • Participate in personal career development plan to maintain skills and develop personal growth through training and education.
  • Assist patients with feeding and maintenance of personal hygiene as appropriate.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Familiarity with Hospital Environment

Knowledge and understanding of hospital and departmental policies that affect day to day activities, e.g. Health and safety, Moving and Handling, Infection Control, Environmental Cleanliness Standards, Monitoring Tools, Safety of Medical gases, COSHH Regs, Fire safety and Evacuation Training.

Demonstrate an ability to develop and maintain effective and efficient administrative monitoring and recording systems and have an understanding of basic computer systems.

Awareness and understanding of Hospital Acquired Infection principles and its prevention.
