Job description

Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated registered healthcare professional to join our Advanced Practice workforce within General Surgery. If you are passionate about delivering high-quality patient care, developing advanced clinical skills, and seeking a rewarding career pathway, this could be the role for you. The successful candidate will undertake a Masters programme in Advanced Clinical Practice whilst working as a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner within the General Surgical team. Working under the supervision of experienced clinicians, the post holder will progressively develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities required to practise at an advanced level, with the opportunity to progress to a Band 8a Advanced Clinical Practitioner role upon successful completion of the programme and achievement of all required competencies. The service comprises a Surgical Assessment Unit and two General Surgical inpatient wards, delivering care to elective and emergency surgical patients. You will join a forward-thinking and supportive department that currently includes both qualified and trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners who work closely with the general surgical medical team. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop across the four pillars of advanced practice: clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research, while contributing to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred surgical services.

Main duties of the job
The Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner will work within the General Surgical team, undertaking a structured programme of clinical and academic development towards Advanced Clinical Practice. Under appropriate supervision, the post holder will participate in the assessment, investigation and management of patients with acute and elective surgical conditions, developing advanced clinical assessment, diagnostic and decision-making skills. Working closely with Consultants, doctors, nurses, ACPs and allied health professionals, the trainee will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care across the surgical pathway. This will include participation in ward rounds, surgical assessment services and inpatient and outpatient care, in line with their level of competence and training. The post holder will develop skills in interpreting investigations, recognising and responding to deteriorating patients, and contributing to treatment, referral and discharge planning. They will be expected to complete an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, achieve speciality-specific competencies and practise within local governance frameworks. The role also offers opportunities to develop across the four pillars of advanced practice through leadership, education, quality improvement, audit and service development activities.
