Position: Full-Time, Term Time Only

Start Date: ASAP / Next Term

About the Role

A thriving and well-equipped secondary school in Barking is seeking an organized, safety-conscious, and skilled Design Technology Technician to join their creative DT and Art department.

In this hands-on role, you will support teaching staff and students across resistant materials, woodwork, metalwork, plastics, and CAD/CAM technologies. You will ensure workshops are safe, tools and machinery are well-maintained, and practical lessons run smoothly and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Workshop Preparation: Prepare materials, timber, metals, plastics, tools, and machinery for daily practical lessons across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5.

  • Machinery & Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, safety checks, and sharpening/servicing of workshop machinery (bandsaws, lathes, pillar drills, sanders) and hand tools.

  • Health & Safety Compliance: Maintain strict health and safety standards in accordance with DATA and COSHH regulations; carry out risk assessment checks across workshops and prep rooms.

  • Technical Support: Assist students and teachers during practical design sessions, demonstrating tool usage and helping with CAD/CAM machinery (3D printers, laser cutters).

  • Stock & Resource Management: Monitor material stock levels, order timber, plastics, fittings, and consumables, and manage incoming deliveries.

Key Requirements

  • Experience working in a school DT workshop, carpentry, engineering, or relevant technical environment.

  • Strong knowledge of health and safety standards relevant to workshop environments (DATA guidelines/H&S certification highly desirable).

  • Practical competence operating standard woodworking/metalworking machinery and hand tools.

  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software and digital manufacturing (e.g., 2D Design, laser cutters, 3D printing) is a strong advantage.

  • Enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to complete one).

What the School Offers

  • Modern, well-resourced workshops with up-to-date machinery and digital fabrication tools.

  • A supportive, collaborative, and creative department team.

  • Excellent transport links across East London (District Line, Hammersmith & City Line, C2C, and London Overground via Barking Station).

  • Opportunities for further professional development and technical training.
