Job description

Company overview

Voltility is a market intelligence platform for the people building, powering and financing the energy transition and data centre power markets. We track battery storage and hybrid power projects across the US and Europe, and in 2026 launched data-centre power coverage.

Following new investment we're growing the team quickly, so this is a chance to join early and help shape the business at an exciting time.

Role overview

The Regulatory Journalist breaks the stories that shape US power projects. You'll build a network across the people who make, shape and contest the rules, and land news on regulatory change and public opposition before it is public: what is coming, who is pushing it, who is fighting it and how it will land on generation, storage and large load. That covers Washington and the state capitals, but just as much the county boards, local utilities and community meetings where projects are actually approved or blocked.

At Voltility, every scoop is a data point: a regulator leaning one way on a contested question, a rule change taking shape before it is published, a county preparing to restrict a type of project, organised local opposition forming against a site. Your intelligence goes straight into the data our customers rely on, and into the analysis that explains what it means.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and work a network of sources across federal and state regulators, market operators, utilities, local officials and planning bodies, regulatory counsel, trade associations, lobbyists, legislative staff and community groups
  • Chase and land scoops on regulatory, legislative and local decisions and responses to projects
  • Verify information to Voltility's sourcing standard before it is used, and record source, date and confidence
  • Work daily with the wider team to decide what to chase and adapt outbound efforts to what sources are saying
  • Pass leads, rumours and partial information to researchers for follow-up and QA, and to analysts where a development needs interpreting
  • Attend industry events, meetings and conferences to build relationships and pick up intelligence
  • Write factual items for the platform and newsletter where they support subscriber value or source relationships
  • Protect sources and handle sensitive information appropriately

Suggested experience

  • Background as a reporter or researcher covering energy regulation, utilities, power markets or local government, with a track record of breaking stories
  • An existing network of sources among US regulators, utilities, regulatory counsel, local officials or community organisations
  • Comfortable working as part of a wider data research team
  • Persistent, discreet and good on the phone
