Job description

Technical Project Manager - Gas Metering

Stark Connect | Gas

Do you have experience delivering industrial and commercial gas metering projects, backed by practical knowledge of electrical instrumentation in gas environments?

We're looking for a Technical Project Manager to lead the safe, compliant and commercially effective delivery of gas metering installations and exchanges, with a particular focus on systems operating above 2 bar.

This role combines project ownership with technical leadership. From initial design and quotation through to installation, commissioning and handover, you'll bring together engineers, contractors and suppliers to deliver projects safely, on time and within budget.

The role

Reporting to the Technical Manager - Gas Metering, you'll manage a programme of predominantly high-pressure and intermediate-pressure gas metering projects. You'll apply your instrumentation experience to technical decisions, support engineers and contractors, and maintain strong relationships with customers throughout delivery.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing gas meter installation and exchange projects, controlling budgets, programmes, quality and customer expectations.
  • Reviewing and approving designs within your delegated authority, including the integration of electrical instrumentation, control and telemetry interfaces.
  • Providing technical leadership for metering systems above 2 bar, within your competence and authorisation.
  • Preparing cost plans and competitive quotations to support future project orders.
  • Managing suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring the right expertise and resources are available.
  • Maintaining compliance with PSSR, applicable IGEM and IET standards, and Stark's engineering and design management procedures.
  • Preparing or coordinating risk assessments, method statements and lifting plans, with appropriate controls for instrumentation work in gas environments.
  • Coordinating commissioning, inspection, calibration, maintenance and fault diagnosis, ensuring records and handover documentation are complete and traceable.
  • Supporting technical investigations, responding to queries and mentoring engineers and contractors.
  • Supporting the coordination of out-of-hours Meter Emergency Service cover.

What you'll bring

You'll need a strong technical grounding in industrial and commercial gas metering, alongside practical experience of electrical instrumentation in natural gas environments.

We're looking for:

  • Relevant accreditation with IGEM or the IET, alongside I&C metering accreditations.
  • An understanding of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 and relevant IGEM and IET standards.
  • Practical experience of installing, commissioning, calibrating, maintaining and diagnosing faults on gas-related instrumentation, such as pressure and temperature transmitters, flow measurement devices, volume correctors and telemetry interfaces.
  • The ability to interpret electrical schematics, instrumentation loop diagrams, wiring drawings and equipment specifications.
  • An understanding of hazardous-area requirements, including equipment suitability, Ex certification and intrinsic safety principles.
  • Contractor management experience and awareness of CDM requirements.
  • Strong planning, commercial and communication skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
  • Confidence working with customers, engineers and suppliers to resolve technical issues and maintain delivery.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and willingness to travel to customer sites and Stark offices as required.

You'll recognise the limits of your own competence and know when to seek specialist support.

It would also be useful to have

  • SCO qualifications.
  • NEBOSH or IOSH certification.
  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status through IGEM or the IET.
  • Experience managing major industrial gas metering projects.
  • A relevant electrical or instrumentation engineering qualification, supported by appropriate hazardous-area training or certification.
  • Experience managing electrical instrumentation packages on industrial gas metering projects.

Why join Stark?

This is an opportunity to take ownership of technically demanding projects and apply your gas metering and instrumentation expertise across the full project lifecycle. You'll play a key role in maintaining engineering standards, supporting colleagues and delivering safe, reliable metering solutions for our customers.
