About us:
Fishtek Ltd provides high quality civil engineering and fisheries consultancy services across the UK, Ireland, SE Asia, and West Africa. We are composed of a team of Civil and Structural Engineers and fisheries biologists engaging with a wider network of specialists across the river environment. Our Engineers are primarily focussed upon the design and construction of fish and eel passes to overcome river obstructions such as dams and weirs, making a positive difference to the environment.
The Role:
Following continued growth, Fishtek has an opportunity for a Civil/Structural Engineer to join our Engineering Design team. The role covers the design, analysis and 3D modelling of fish and eel passes and associated river structures, from feasibility and concept through to detailed design, construction drawings and support during construction. The role is primarily based at our Dartington office, with occasional visits to project sites across the UK for surveys, inspections and construction support. This role is particularly suited to individuals with around 3 years’ post-graduate experience in civil or structural design who are skilled in, or keen to develop, 3D modelling and drafting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design fish and eel passes and associated civil and structural works, including steel, aluminium, reinforced concrete and timber elements, to relevant codes and standards
- Prepare structural calculations, design notes and design reports for checking and approval
- Develop 3D models and produce 2D general arrangement, detail and construction drawings using Rhinoceros, Solid Edge and/or Revit
- Coordinate design inputs with our fisheries biologists, hydraulic modelling and construction team to deliver buildable, maintainable solutions
- Contribute to design risk management under CDM 2015, including design risk registers and information for the Health and Safety File
- Take off quantities and prepare bills of quantities, and support cost estimates and embodied carbon assessments
- Carry out site visits for surveys, inspections and construction support, and respond to technical queries during construction, particularly on Design & Build projects
- Maintain drawing registers and model and document control in line with company procedures
- Report to the Technical Director (Engineering) and assist with any other projects as required
Qualifications and Key Skills:
- BSc, BEng, MEng or MSc in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Approximately 3 years’ post-graduate experience in civil and/or structural engineering design
- Sound understanding of structural analysis and the design of steel, reinforced concrete and timber elements to Eurocodes
- Proficiency in, or a clear willingness to learn, 3D modelling and drafting using Rhinoceros, Solid Edge and/or Revit
- Ability to produce clear, accurate general arrangement and detail drawings to drawing office standards
- Understanding of designers’ duties under CDM 2015, including design risk management
- Good IT skills (MS Office, particularly Excel) and willingness to learn new tools and workflows
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow engineering standards
- Clear written and verbal communication, including calculations, design notes and technical reports
- Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a collaborative technical team
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites across the UK.
Desirable (Training Provided):
- Working towards Chartered status with the ICE or IStructE
- Some experience with structural analysis software (e.g. Tekla Structural Designer, RFEM, Robot or similar)
- Some experience of hydraulic structures, or of working in or near watercourses
- Some experience producing fabrication drawings for steel, aluminium or composite elements, and/or parametric modelling (e.g. Grasshopper)
- Awareness of embodied carbon assessment in design
- An interest in rivers, ecology, conservation or sustainable engineering
What We Offer:
- Competitive salary £35,000 - £40,000 (dependent on experience and skills)
- Clear progression path towards more senior roles
- Mentoring and support towards Chartered status, with training in engineering design and 3D modelling software
- Company pension and annual bonus
- Supportive working environment and excellent work/life balance in a purpose-built office located in Dartington, South Devon
