Role Overview

A caring secondary school in Birmingham is seeking an empathetic, diligent, and vigilant Safeguarding Officer to join their dedicated pastoral and child protection team ASAP. Working alongside the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), you will play a central role in maintaining a robust safeguarding culture across the school community. In this key non-teaching role, you will act as a primary point of contact for student welfare concerns, manage confidential child protection records, liaise with external social care agencies, and ensure that every pupil learns within a safe, supported environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, log, and triage child protection and welfare concerns submitted by staff, pupils, and parents using safeguarding software (e.g., CPOMS, MyConcern).

  • Conduct initial triage assessments and lead internal welfare monitoring for vulnerable pupils, young carers, and students on Child in Need (CIN) or Child Protection (CP) plans.

  • Attend multi-agency meetings, strategy discussions, and Family Support reviews, preparing concise case summaries and accurate report contributions.

  • Act as a direct liaison with Birmingham Children’s Trust, social workers, early help services, police, and NHS mental health teams (CAMHS).

  • Deliver targeted 1:1 welfare check-ins with vulnerable students and assist the DSL in delivering up-to-date safeguarding training for all school staff.

Key Requirements

  • Level 3 Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) qualification (or willingness to complete immediate Level 3 training).

  • Proven experience in a safeguarding, child protection, or intensive pastoral support role within a UK school, local authority, or youth services setting.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of statutory guidance, including Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), Working Together to Safeguard Children, and local Birmingham thresholds.

  • High proficiency in using electronic safeguarding recording systems (CPOMS, MyConcern, or Arbor).

  • Exceptional communication, active listening, and crisis management skills with a calm, empathetic manner under pressure.

  • Legal right to work in the UK.

School Highlights & Benefits

  • Dedicated safeguarding suite and collaborative pastoral leadership team committed to student wellbeing.

  • Comprehensive continuous professional development (CPD) and specialized external child protection training opportunities.

  • Central Birmingham location with excellent public transport networks across the West Midlands and free on-site staff parking.

  • Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) enrolment and term-time-only working arrangements.
