Job description

Teacher of Design & Technology (DT)

Location: Redbridge

Ofsted Rating: Outstanding

School Type: Secondary School & Sixth Form (Co-educational)

An Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ secondary school in the London Borough of Redbridge is seeking an inventive, passionate, and highly skilled Teacher of Design & Technology to join their state-of-the-art Design & Innovation department. This is a premier opportunity for an ambitious educator, whether an experienced DT specialist looking to work in a high-achieving environment or an energetic Early Career Teacher (ECT), to inspire hands-on creativity, engineering mindsets, and practical problem-solving across an eager student body.

About the Role

As a Teacher of Design & Technology, you will empower students to transform creative ideas into functional prototypes and high-quality products. Teaching across Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE Design & Technology / Engineering / Product Design), and Key Stage 5 (A-Level Product Design / 3D Design), you will utilize fully equipped workshops, CAD/CAM suites, 3D printers, laser cutters, and traditional woodworking and metalworking tools to foster technical mastery and spatial awareness.

  • Start Date: Immediate or upcoming term

  • Environment: A flagship co-educational secondary school celebrated for academic innovation, exceptional student progress, and outstanding practical facilities

  • Culture: A collaborative, safety-conscious, and well-resourced workplace backed by dedicated DT technicians and a supportive, forward-thinking leadership team

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver creative, rigorous Design & Technology lessons across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5 that integrate design thinking, material properties, and manufacturing techniques.

  • Prepare students thoroughly for national GCSE and A-Level examinations, guiding them through non-exam assessment (NEA) design portfolios and practical prototyping.

  • Integrate computer-aided design and manufacturing tools (e.g., SolidWorks, 2D Design, CAD/CAM, 3D printing) seamlessly into the curriculum.

  • Maintain exemplary health and safety standards in workshops and machinery areas in strict accordance with DATA and CLEAPSS safety guidelines.

  • Assess, track, and monitor pupil progress, offering constructive feedback that stretches high-performing students while building practical confidence in developing learners.

  • Lead or support departmental enrichment, such as STEM engineering challenges, design clubs, robotics workshops, and national student design competitions.

Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognized teaching credential.

  • A strong academic background with a degree in Design & Technology, Product Design, Industrial Design, Engineering, or a closely related field.

  • Up-to-date health and safety certifications for secondary workshop machinery (or a willingness to complete DATA training upon appointment).

  • Proven track record or demonstrated capability of delivering outstanding DT teaching across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (KS5/A-Level product design experience is highly desirable).

  • Thorough knowledge of national DT specifications and exam board criteria (e.g., AQA, Edexcel, OCR).

  • Excellent classroom management, spatial design awareness, and an infectious passion for modern engineering and product design.

Salary & Benefits

  • Pay Scale: Outer London MPS/UPS pay scale (commensurate with experience), with potential TLR opportunities available for key stage coordination or STEM/engineering pathway leadership.

  • Comprehensive continuous professional development (CPD), specialist workshop safety re-accreditation, and clear avenues for rapid career progression in a top-tier school environment.

How to Apply

If you are an innovative, forward-thinking DT specialist ready to inspire the next generation of engineers and designers at an Outstanding school in Redbridge, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your application as soon as possible for consideration.
