Role Overview

A supportive secondary school in Birmingham is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and qualified School Nurse to manage medical provision and pupil healthcare across the campus ASAP. In this vital non-teaching pastoral role, you will oversee the daily running of the school medical suite, deliver immediate first aid and triage, formulate Individual Healthcare Plans (IHCPs) for pupils with complex medical needs, and promote physical and mental wellbeing. Working closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), SENCO, and local NHS public health services, you will help maintain a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment for all pupils.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the school medical room, administering clinical first aid, emergency care, and prescribed medications in compliance with school policy and medical standards.

  • Formulate, review, and maintain Individual Healthcare Plans (IHCPs) for pupils with long-term medical conditions (e.g., severe allergies, asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy).

  • Serve as the central point of contact for parents, carers, GPs, paediatric specialists, and NHS school nursing teams for statutory immunizations and health checks.

  • Collaborate with the school safeguarding team, logging health-related child protection concerns in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).

  • Organize health promotion initiatives and deliver staff training on emergency medical protocols (e.g., EpiPen/AAI usage, asthma care, and emergency response).

Key Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RGN / RSCN) with active NMC registration (SCPHN qualification in School Nursing is highly desirable).

  • Proven clinical nursing experience, ideally within a school, paediatric, adolescent, or public health setting.

  • Thorough understanding of paediatric first aid, chronic condition management, medication administration protocols, and statutory safeguarding guidelines.

  • Strong interpersonal, empathetic, and organizational skills with a calm, reassuring approach.

  • Legal right to work in the UK.

School Highlights & Benefits

  • Dedicated, modern medical room facilities and quiet recovery areas.

  • Collaborative pastoral and senior leadership team committed to pupil welfare, health education, and safety.

  • Accessible Birmingham location with excellent public transport networks and free on-site staff parking.

  • Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) enrolment and term-time-only working hours.
