Role Overview

An outstanding secondary school in Birmingham is seeking an energetic, qualified, and proactive School Nurse to lead health care provision across their campus ASAP. In this critical pastoral support role, you will oversee the school medical suite, deliver immediate first aid, manage complex Individual Healthcare Plans (IHCPs) for pupils with chronic conditions, and drive health promotion initiatives across the school. Working side-by-side with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), SENCO, and local NHS public health teams, you will foster a safe, supportive, and healthy environment for all students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of the school medical room, delivering clinical first aid, emergency care, and prescribed medication administration in line with school policies.

  • Formulate, review, and update Individual Healthcare Plans (IHCPs) for pupils with long-term medical conditions (e.g., severe allergies, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy).

  • Act as the primary point of contact for families, local GPs, paediatric teams, and NHS school nursing services for statutory health screening and immunization drives.

  • Collaborate with the safeguarding team on pupil welfare matters, identifying and logging health-related child protection concerns in adherence to Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).

  • Deliver health education initiatives and provide staff training on emergency medical protocols (e.g., EpiPen/AAI usage, asthma care, and diabetes management).

Key Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RGN / RSCN) with active NMC registration (SCPHN qualification in School Nursing is advantageous).

  • Proven clinical nursing experience, ideally within a school, paediatric, adolescent, or public health setting.

  • In-depth knowledge of paediatric first aid, chronic condition management, medication administration, and safeguarding legislation.

  • Excellent communication, empathy, and organizational skills, with a compassionate approach to supporting young people.

  • Legal right to work in the UK.

School Highlights & Benefits

  • Well-resourced medical facilities and dedicated recovery spaces.

  • Highly collaborative pastoral and leadership team committed to pupil wellness and safety.

  • Convenient Birmingham location with excellent transport links across the West Midlands and free on-site staff parking.

  • Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) enrolment and term-time-only working hours.
