Science Teacher – SEND

Woodfield School | Merstham, Surrey

Salary: Main Pay Scale to Upper Pay Scale (Fringe), plus SEN allowance

Contract: Permanent | Full-time

Start date: January 2027

Inspire curiosity. Build confidence. Make science accessible.

Woodfield School is looking for an enthusiastic and skilled Science Teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to join our supportive specialist school in January 2027.

This is an opportunity to bring science to life for young people with special educational needs and disabilities, helping pupils explore ideas, ask questions and understand the world around them.

Woodfield provides education for secondary-aged pupils and students in Post-16 provision with learning and additional needs. We combine ambitious, accessible learning with a strong focus on communication, independence and preparation for adulthood.

About the role

You will plan and deliver engaging science lessons that respond to pupils’ individual learning needs. Through practical activities, clear explanations and carefully adapted teaching, you will help pupils develop their scientific understanding and experience success.

Working closely with teaching assistants and other colleagues, you will:

  • deliver a relevant and accessible science curriculum with clear progression;
  • adapt teaching and resources for pupils working at different learning levels;
  • organise safe, purposeful practical activities that encourage curiosity and participation;
  • assess progress and use this information to plan pupils’ next steps;
  • support pupils towards appropriate accreditation and qualifications;
  • establish positive routines and support pupils’ engagement and emotional wellbeing; and
  • contribute to the development of science provision across the school.

You may also teach other subjects where required within the agreed timetable.

Safeguarding is central to the role. You will maintain professional boundaries, recognise and report concerns promptly, and follow the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures.

About you

You will hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and have the subject knowledge and teaching skills to deliver science confidently and effectively.

We welcome applications from teachers in special, primary and secondary settings who have experience of supporting pupils with SEND and can demonstrate strong science teaching practice.

You will bring:

  • enthusiasm for science and the ability to make learning engaging and meaningful;
  • effective planning, teaching and assessment skills;
  • an understanding of SEND and how to overcome barriers to learning;
  • high expectations of pupils’ achievement, participation and behaviour;
  • a calm, compassionate approach informed by an understanding of pupils’ individual needs;
  • the ability to work effectively with teaching assistants, families and other professionals; and
  • a commitment to safeguarding, inclusive practice and your own professional development.

Experience of teaching Entry Level science qualifications or other suitable accreditation would be advantageous.

What we offer

  • A friendly, supportive and collaborative school community.
  • A pupil-centred approach that values positive relationships.
  • Opportunities for professional development.
  • The opportunity to contribute to science teaching within a specialist setting.
  • A rewarding role helping young people develop knowledge, confidence and independence.
