Job description

Job summary
You will split your time between clinical support (such as basic observations and phlebotomy) and nurse team administration (such as appointment booking, updating patient records, and handling correspondence). Full training for specific clinical competencies will be provided where necessary.

Main duties of the job
To support the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of efficient clinical and general practice services, working under the indirect supervision of registered healthcare professionals.

Wylcwm Street Surgery is a busy, friendly GP surgery looking for a flexible and organised individual. This hybrid role combines patient-facing clinical support with essential administrative duties, helping our multi-disciplinary team deliver safe, high-quality care.

Job responsibilities
Clinical Duties (HCA)

  • Take basic patient observations including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, weight, and oxygen saturations.
  • Perform phlebotomy (venepuncture) and handle samples as trained.
  • Carry out routine NHS health checks and support long-term condition monitoring.
  • Perform ECGs and basic urinalysis.
  • Assist clinicians and nurses in the treatment room, minor surgeries, or chaperone patients.
  • Maintain infection control standards and restock clinical consulting rooms.


Administrative Duties

  • Answer telephone and online patient enquiries in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Book, manage, and coordinate patient appointments.
  • Update patient records accurately on the clinical computer system (e.g., EMIS).
  • Process clinical correspondence, referrals, and administrative paperwork.
  • Signpost patients to the correct healthcare professional or local service.


Qualifications
Essential

  • Good standard of general education (GCSE English and Maths or equivalent).
  • Basic computer literacy and confidence using office or clinical software.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible, reliable, and able to work 25 hours across 4 days in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and data protection (GDPR).


Desirable

  • Previous experience working in a GP surgery or primary care setting.
  • Formal phlebotomy or HCA qualification / Care Certificate.
  • Experience with medical reception or clinical coding/admin.
