If you're a Mechanical Maintenance Technician who likes proper mechanical engineering, this is probably going to be more your thing. Big machinery. Real breakdowns. Problems that need diagnosing, not just another part swapping out because that's what happened last time. You'll be working in a heavy manufacturing environment where, when something stops, people need you to know what you're looking at. And that's the attraction... As Mechanical Maintenance Technician, you'll get to use the skills you spent years learning. You'll strip machinery down, read engineering drawings, work through hydraulic and pneumatic systems, repair, rebuild, fit, weld and machine when needed. Sometimes you'll know exactly what the problem is. Sometimes you won't. Those are probably the jobs you'll enjoy most. Because you're the Mechanical Maintenance Technician who wants to understand why something failed, particularly if it keeps happening. There's planned preventative maintenance, of course, but this isn't a role where you'll spend every shift ticking your way through a maintenance sheet. Production relies on the machinery around you. When something goes wrong, you'll diagnose it, get it safely running again and, where you can, stop the same problem coming back.
