Job summary
Join Our Emergency Department Team

We are seeking enthusiastic, compassionate, skilled and motivated Healthcare Support Workers to join our busy and dynamic Emergency Department team.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of emergency care, supporting patients of all ages who present with a wide range of conditions, from minor injuries to life-threatening emergencies. As a Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within a fast-paced and rewarding clinical environment.

Working alongside registered nurses, doctors, advanced clinical practitioners and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will help ensure patients receive safe, effective and compassionate care while maintaining the highest standards of dignity and respect.

You would be expected to flexibly work across the emergency medicine footprint if required for safe skill-mix.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of registered healthcare professionals.
  • Undertake and record routine clinical observations, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturations and NEWS2 assessments.
  • Assist patients with personal care, mobility and activities of daily living.
  • Support patient flow throughout the Emergency Department.
  • Perform venepuncture and ECG recording (following competency assessment and training).
  • Assist with specimen collection and ensure timely transportation of samples.
  • Prepare clinical areas and equipment for patient assessment and treatment.
  • Maintain accurate patient documentation and electronic records.
  • Support infection prevention and control standards.
  • Respond appropriately to deteriorating patients and escalate concerns promptly.
  • Contribute to creating a positive patient experience through excellent communication and compassionate care.

Job responsibilities

  • Responsible for own actions, ensuring all patient interactions/observations are communicated to trained staff.
  • Show dignity and respect in dealings with patients, staff and visitors.
  • Undertake agreed clinical and non-clinical tasks following training, ensuring referral to the appropriate trained staff as appropriate.
  • Organise own daily workload e.g. use and cleaning of identified medical and non-medical equipment (beds, hoists etc.).
  • Assist with personal patient care e.g. feeding and toileting.
  • Support less experienced members of staff in their orientation to the ward and role
  • Utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient data
  • Support the team in expected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need
  • Support staff and patients exposed to difficult situations arising in the clinical area e.g after receipt of bad news or following an unexpected event
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
  • Ensure daily cleaning checks are completed and cubicles ready for use.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.

Qualifications
Essential

  • NVQ Level 3 in care or willing to working towards
  • Demonstrate basic numeracy and literacy skills


Experience
Essential

  • Recent clinical experience working within the Emergency Department.
  • Experience of supporting a small team.
  • Completed Care Certificate


Knowledge
Essential

  • Understanding of Trust Policy and Procedure
  • To take lead within their own clinical area.


Desirable

  • An understanding of current issues relating to the NHS.
