Job description

DATA ENGINEER

Faculty of Health

Full-time, Fixed-term for 24 months in the first instance

Grade 6 (£31,236 - £37,694)

We are seeking an exceptional Data Engineer to join the Health Informatics Centre at the University of Dundee.

You will work in the Data team who maintain and operate a clinical e-data repository; containing over 30 years of medical histories for nearly 20% of the Scottish population.

About the Role

Are you a self-starter who loves working collaboratively, problem solving and making a difference to health data research and innovation? Do you get really excited by BIG data, innovative data engineering and the potential to deliver and catalyse new research into pragmatic solutions for better health outcomes? If so, you could be working with the Health Informatics Centre team

Key Responsibilities
Your priorities will include:

  • Handle diverse data types (structured, unstructured, imaging), develop and maintain data loads, apply cleaning routines, prepare and de-identify data, and map to common data models for federated use.
  • Deliver projects end-to-end from feasibility counts to dataset delivery, provide technical and governance guidance, lead small internal developments, and ensure best practice solutions.
  • Perform routine and ad-hoc ETL scripting (SQL, Python), integrate structured and unstructured datasets into the master repository, and support clinicians with data extracts for research.
  • Acquire or maintain knowledge of HIC domain and health data governance/ethics to ensure compliance and safe handling of sensitive patient data.
  • Act as a team player, communicate effectively within the Data Team and externally with project managers, leadership, and customers, while managing and documenting progress independently.

Who We're Looking For
Essential

  • Strong experience in ETL, relational databases (MS SQL), and query optimisation.
  • Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences with experience of client relationship management.
  • A proactive, problem-solving mindset with a "can-do" attitude.
  • Ability to work with clients to elucidate requirements and independently design technical solutions to complete projects in a structured manner.
  • A team player.
