Job description

Job summary
This post is a Secondment for 3 years to cover a Secondment.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and visionary Consultant Midwife to join the Women and Children's Service at Powys Teaching Health Board. The successful candidate will provide expert clinical leadership, strategic influence, education, research and consultancy across maternity services, promoting excellence in personalised, evidence-based and woman-centred care.

Main duties of the job

  • Providing expert midwifery leadership and acting as a role model for clinical excellence across maternity services. This will include supporting the Bronze on Call senior management rota.
  • Supporting midwives in the management of women with complex needs, including the development of individualised care plans and decision-making in complex situations.
  • Leading strategic service development and quality improvement initiatives to enhance safety, outcomes and experiences for women and families.
  • Promoting physiological birth, continuity of care and personalised maternity care pathways in line with national and local priorities.
  • Developing and implementing evidence-based policies, guidelines, standards and care pathways to support best practice in maternity care.
  • Providing expert advice to senior leaders, multidisciplinary teams and partner organisations on midwifery practice, maternal wellbeing and public health initiatives.
  • Developing and delivering education, training and workforce development programmes to support the ongoing professional growth of midwives and maternity staff.
  • Leading and contributing to clinical audit, service evaluation, research and innovation activities to improve maternity services and inform future practice.
  • Supporting women and families through specialist services, including the development of birth reflection and debrief services following.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will operate across the four pillars of consultant practice: Expert Clinical Practice, Leadership and Consultancy, Education and Training, and Research and Evaluation, driving continuous improvement and supporting the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate maternity care.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential

  • Registered Midwife
  • Master's degree in relevant subject
  • Post Graduate Certificate in education or relevant teaching experience
  • Demonstrate a broad but in-depth knowledge of health policy in relation to midwifery practice, with reference to normality and Public Health agenda
  • Detailed knowledge of midwifery issues and impact on service delivery


Desirable

  • Accredited counselling course or experience in providing support in complex/traumatic circumstances
  • Completed PhD or professional doctorate


Experience
Essential

  • Significant experience in clinical midwifery practice, including responsibility for organising specialist care and advice for complex aspects of pregnancy
  • Evidence of managing a clinical area, leading elements of service provision and of supporting staff development in the clinical environment
  • Manage change and develop innovation in practice
  • Clear portfolio of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of clinical leadership and supervision of other staff
  • Evidence of participating in regional and national networks
  • Multi-agency working
  • Public speaking

  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level within the midwifery profession
  • Evidence of involvement in research in practice
