The Vacancy

Mobile Service Technician

We are looking for a responsible maintenance tech, to carry out multibrand service work, remedial repairs, and installations. To have the ability to complete fault diagnosis troubleshooting and root cause analysis of industrial air compressors and auxiliary equipment. This role typically involves working on rotary screw, reciprocating, centrifugal, and other types of compressors used in manufacturing industry. The candidate must be willing to be flexible in their approach to working hours and put the customer first, to ensure the customers site stays up and running.

About the Role:

1. Installation & Commissioning

  • Install, set up and commission compressors, air treatment equipment and associated compressed air systems.
  • Carry out mechanical and electrical connections, ensuring correct alignment, installation, and system configuration.
  • Commission equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company procedures.
  • Ensure all installations comply with relevant health and safety requirements.

2. Maintenance & Servicing

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance and routine servicing on a wide range of compressor systems.
  • Complete oil and filter changes, belt adjustments, separator replacements, and other scheduled maintenance tasks.
  • Inspect compressors and associated equipment for wear, damage, or potential failure.
  • Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, efficiency, and performance.

3. Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control-system faults using appropriate diagnostic equipment and testing methods.
  • Investigate compressor performance issues, pressure problems, air leaks, and system faults.
  • Repair or replace defective components, including valves, seals, bearings, belts, sensors, and other compressor parts.
  • Work efficiently to minimise customer downtime and restore equipment to reliable operation.

4. Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete accurate service reports following all site visits.
  • Record work carried out, parts used, equipment condition and any outstanding issues.
  • Provide customers with clear recommendations for remedial work, replacement equipment, or system improvements.
  • Maintain accurate service and maintenance records in accordance with company procedures.

5. Compliance, Health & Safety

  • Follow company procedures, manufacturer guidelines, and relevant industry standards.
  • Complete appropriate risk assessments and method statements before undertaking work.
  • Work safely when dealing with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and pressurised systems.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping and ensure environmental requirements are followed.

6.Breakdown & Emergency Callouts

  • Ability to respond professionally to compressor breakdowns and emergency callouts.
  • Methodical approach to fault finding under pressure.
  • Ability to determine whether equipment can be safely returned to service.
  • Good understanding of temporary repairs versus permanent remedial solutions.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rota, if applicable.

Key Skills, Experience & Requirements:

  • Strong working knowledge of a wide range of compressor types and manufacturers.
  • Good understanding of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems.
  • Experience working with PLCs, sensors, control systems, and compressor controllers.
  • Practical experience with compressed air pipework and associated equipment.
  • Strong fault-finding, diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple service requirements.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Relevant mechanical/electrical qualifications or proven industry experience would be advantageous.
  • Understanding of compressor energy consumption and system efficiency.
  • Ability to identify opportunities to reduce energy costs.
  • Experience with air leak surveys, data logging and compressor performance analysis would be advantageous.
  • Understanding of load/unload, variable-speed, and fixed-speed compressor operation.

Compressor-Specific Training

  • Knowledge and experience of rotary screw compressors and major manufacturers such as Ingersoll Rand, Atlas Copco, BOGE and ELGi would be advantageous.
  • Manufacturer-specific training and experience with different compressor models is desirable but not essential.
  • We recognise that engineers may have experience with some manufacturers but not others, and we are able to provide additional training to address any knowledge or experience gaps.

Mechanical Engineering or Technical Qualification

  • A qualification or background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or another relevant technical discipline would be advantageous.
  • Candidates with relevant practical engineering experience but without formal qualifications will also be considered.
  • A strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and industrial systems is important for the role.

On-the-Job Training & Development

  • We provide structured on-the-job training to help engineers develop the knowledge and practical experience required to work on our core range of compressor and compressed air equipment.
  • New engineers will initially work alongside experienced engineers, gaining hands-on experience in:
    • Compressor servicing and maintenance.
    • Fault finding and diagnostics.
    • Compressor installation and commissioning.
    • Electrical and control systems.
    • Pneumatic systems and pipework.
    • Air treatment equipment and compressed air systems.

  • Training will be tailored to the individual's existing skills and experience, allowing engineers to build their competence and confidence progressively.
  • We are committed to continued professional development and providing opportunities for engineers to expand their technical knowledge and manufacturer-specific expertise.
