Dementia Adviser

We are looking for a warm, thoughtful and organised Dementia Adviser to join our supportive Cambridgeshire team, working 21 hours per week across Monday to Wednesday on a permanent basis.

This is a community based role covering Fenland and Huntingdonshire. You will spend much of your time out in local communities, working in GP Practices meeting people face to face, carrying out home visits, attending community groups and building relationships with local organisations. While some administrative work can be completed from home, this role is centred on being present in the community and supporting people where they are.

What could a typical week look like?

No two weeks are the same.

You might start your day in a GP practice, supporting patients living with dementia. listening to what matters most to them and helping them navigate the challenges they are facing. Later, you could be visiting a community group raising awareness of the work of the society
Throughout the week, you will work closely with people living with dementia, family members and carers, offering personalised information, practical guidance and emotional support. You will also connect people with local services and community groups that can help them stay active, informed and supported.

Alongside your direct work with people affected by dementia, you will collaborate with health, social care and community partners to ensure people can access the right support at the right time. You will take part in our referral triage process, helping to ensure new referrals are responded to promptly, sensitively and fairly.

You will manage your own caseload, maintain accurate records and balance a varied workload, all while keeping the individual and their needs at the heart of every interaction.
You will be part of a welcoming and supportive local team who share knowledge, reflect together and support one another. We provide ongoing learning opportunities, training and development, so you can continue to grow in your role and deepen your understanding of dementia.

You do not need previous experience in dementia, health or social care to apply. We are looking for people with transferable skills, empathy and a genuine commitment to supporting others.

You may have gained these skills through roles in customer service, retail, education, housing, hospitality, community services, charities, faith organisations or other people focused environments. Personal experience of supporting or caring for someone affected by dementia is also valuable.

Please note that regular travel across Fenland and Huntingdonshire is required. You will need to be able to travel independently between community locations where public transport may not always be available.

About you

You will have:

- An understanding of dementia, personal experience of supporting someone affected by dementia, or a willingness to learn about the experiences of people living with dementia and those who care for them.
- Experience of providing information, guidance, advice or emotional support. This may have been gained in health, social care, voluntary, community, customer service, education, housing, retail, hospitality or other people focused roles.
- Excellent listening and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
- The ability to manage and prioritise your workload effectively, with appropriate support and guidance.
- Confidence using IT systems to maintain accurate and confidential records.
- A compassionate, person centred and non judgemental approach, with respect for diversity, individuality and lived experience.
- The ability to travel independently across the local area.
- The confidence to communicate with a wide range of audiences and adapt your approach to meet individual needs. You may also represent Alzheimer's Society at local events, raising awareness of dementia and connecting people with support and services.

Key responsibilities

- Build supportive and trusting relationships with people living with dementia and their carers, recognising and respecting their individual circumstances and needs.
- Provide personalised information, advice and emotional support that reflects each person's values, preferences, culture and background.
- Deliver support through home visits, telephone conversations and partnership working with professionals and community organisations.
- Participate in the triage rota, ensuring referrals are responded to promptly, sensitively and equitably.
- Manage a defined caseload, maintaining accurate, respectful and confidential records.
- Connect people to relevant local services, support networks and community opportunities that help reduce isolation and improve wellbeing.
- Work collaboratively as part of a supportive team, contributing to shared learning, reflective practice and continuous improvement.
- Facilitate information sessions and peer support groups, creating safe and inclusive spaces where people affected by dementia can connect, share experiences and access tailored information and guidance.
