Job description
Description

Location: Cambridge, UK – This position offers flexible working options, including predominantly remote work. Applicants are preferably based (or willing to relocate) within a comfortable commuting distance of our office to attend onsite as required.

Want to build the engineering foundations that help teams across Jagex deliver better software, faster?

As an Automation Engineer at Jagex, you’ll design, build, and evolve the automation systems, tools, and workflows that support an open-world experience in Unreal Engine across PC and console platforms.

As our Lead Delivery Engineer, you’ll establish and lead a new Delivery Engineering function within our Developer Platform division. Your team will own the shared tooling, automation, standards, and engineering practices that help our game, platform, and product teams build, test, and release high-quality software with greater speed, confidence, and consistency.

This is a genuinely greenfield opportunity where you'll grow and lead a multidisciplinary team of Automation Engineers, set its direction and priorities, and work with development leads across multiple products and technology stacks to solve delivery challenges and drive the adoption of modern engineering practices.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Shape and execute the strategy for Delivery Engineering, establishing a clear roadmap that improves developer productivity, software quality, release reliability, and engineering consistency across Jagex.
  • Build and lead a growing team of Automation Engineers, developing the team’s capabilities across software automation, testing, continuous delivery, release engineering, and developer tooling.
  • Partner with game, platform, and product engineering teams to understand their delivery challenges, turning their needs into practical solutions that development teams trust, adopt, and benefit from.
  • Lead the development of reusable platforms, automation, and engineering standards, helping teams improve how they build, test, release, and operate software while retaining appropriate autonomy.
  • Modernise fragmented tooling and delivery practices across the business, reducing duplication and applying emerging technologies, including AI, where they can demonstrate measurable improvements in engineering productivity.
  • Define and track engineering effectiveness metrics, using data to demonstrate improvements in developer experience, delivery performance, software quality, and platform adoption.

What we’re looking for:

  • Proven experience leading the design and evolution of automation platforms, engineering frameworks, or developer tooling within a modern software engineering environment.
  • Strong programming experience in one or more languages, such as C#, Java, Python, Go, or TypeScript, with the technical depth to guide teams in building scalable and maintainable engineering solutions.
  • Extensive experience with automated testing and continuous delivery, including test automation frameworks and CI/CD platforms such as GitHub Actions, TeamCity, Azure DevOps, or comparable technologies.
  • Practical experience with cloud-native engineering environments, including cloud platforms, Infrastructure as Code, configuration management, containerisation, and orchestration technologies such as Terraform, Ansible, Docker, or Kubernetes.
  • Demonstrable understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, and microservices, with experience making pragmatic technical decisions across complex or varied technology stacks.
  • Proven ability to lead technical initiatives and drive adoption, including defining engineering metrics, influencing across teams, and delivering measurable improvements in software delivery.

What we offer:

When you join Jagex you can look forward to a generous Perks & Benefits package including:

  • Private Healthcare, including Dental Plan.
  • Discretionary annual performance bonus.
  • Minimum 6% Pension contributions.
  • Life Insurance.
  • Enhanced family leave policies from day 1.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • 25 days annual leave + Bank holidays & the option to buy/sell holidays + so much more!

Inclusion & Accessibility Statement

We are committed to providing equal opportunities and creating an environment where everyone can thrive. We welcome applications from all backgrounds, and we recruit, develop, and promote based on merit and ability.

If you require any reasonable adjustments to support you during the recruitment process, please let us know when you’re invited to interview.

Right to Work Statement

This role is only open to applicants who have the permanent right to work in the UK. We are unable to provide or take over visa sponsorship for this position, either now or in the future.
