Job description

Senior Risk Manager - Energy

Location: North of England

Working pattern: Hybrid, with regular site attendance

Sector: Energy / Major Infrastructure

Employment: Full-time, permanent

The Opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Risk Manager to support the delivery of a major, complex programme within the UK energy sector.

This is a strong opportunity for someone who enjoys working on large-scale, technically challenging programmes where risk management genuinely influences decision-making rather than simply maintaining a risk register.

You’ll work closely with project controls, programme leadership, technical teams and the supply chain to identify and understand risk exposure, improve the quality of risk information and make sure mitigation activity translates into measurable action.

Experience within nuclear would certainly be useful, but it isn’t essential. We’re equally interested in people who have developed strong project or programme risk experience within other regulated, infrastructure or capital-intensive environments.

The Role

As Senior Risk Manager, you’ll take responsibility for the identification, assessment, analysis and management of risks and assumptions across projects and programmes of varying scale and complexity.

The position combines hands-on risk management with stakeholder engagement, quantitative analysis and continuous improvement of risk processes.

You’ll work closely with the wider Project Controls function to ensure risk information is properly integrated with cost and schedule data, including the delivery and interpretation of QSRA and QCRA

Key Responsibilities

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Planning, designing and implementing risk management processes tailored to individual project and programme requirements.
  • Facilitating risk workshops with project teams, stakeholders and subject matter experts.
  • Creating, maintaining and improving project and programme risk registers.
  • Reviewing and challenging risk information to improve the quality and robustness of risk data.
  • Driving mitigation activity and ensuring agreed actions are actively managed.
  • Supporting project teams in developing clear, specific and measurable risk responses.
  • Undertaking Quantitative Schedule Risk Analysis (QSRA) to assess schedule uncertainty, key risk drivers and confidence in programme milestones.
  • Undertaking Quantitative Cost Risk Analysis (QCRA) to assess cost uncertainty, potential financial exposure and appropriate levels of contingency.
  • Helping project and programme leadership understand remaining risk exposure and its implications for delivery.
  • Producing clear, timely risk reporting for senior stakeholders.
  • Collaborating with Cost, Planning, Scheduling and other Project Controls disciplines to maintain alignment across project information.
  • Working with supply-chain partners to identify and incorporate supplier and contractor risks.
  • Supporting improvements to risk processes, governance and reporting as programmes evolve.

What We’re Looking For

You’ll have professional risk management experience across part or all of the project lifecycle, ideally gained within energy, infrastructure, nuclear, defence, utilities or another complex regulated environment.

More importantly, you’ll be comfortable challenging information, asking the right questions and translating complex risk data into something project teams and senior stakeholders can actually use.

You should bring:

  • Strong project and/or programme risk management experience.
  • Experience working within, or closely alongside, a Project Controls function.
  • Practical experience of QSRA and/or QCRA.
  • Good understanding of quantitative risk techniques, including Monte Carlo analysis, probability distributions and confidence levels.
  • Experience conducting or supporting cost and/or schedule QRA.
  • Working knowledge of risk tools such as Safran Risk, @RISK, PRA or similar.
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office capability, with experience producing senior-level reports and presentations.
  • Exposure to reporting or risk management platforms such as Power BI, ARM, Xactium, Predict or Tableau would be useful.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills.
  • Confidence working with senior stakeholders, technical specialists and supply-chain organisations.
  • The ability to adapt risk processes and strategies as programmes and delivery environmen
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications & Professional Development

  • A degree in Engineering, Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration or a related discipline would be beneficial, although demonstrable industry experience is equally relevant.
  • Membership of a recognised professional body such as the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) or Association for Project Management (APM) would also be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with recognised risk frameworks or standards such as ISO 31000, APM guidance, the Orange Book or IPA approaches is desirable.
  • Formal risk qualifications, including APM Risk Certificate Level 2, Management of Risk (MoR) or equivalent, would be beneficial but are not essential.

Security & Sector Requirements

Due to the nature of the programme, candidates will need to be able to obtain the appropriate level of UK security clearance.

Previous nuclear experience is desirable rather than essential. Candidates coming from other major infrastructure, energy, defence or highly regulated programmes who are interested in developing their career within this sector are encouraged to apply.

Why Consider It? This is a strong opportunity to develop your career within a growing area of the UK’s energy and infrastructure market.

You’ll gain exposure to a major, complex programme, working alongside experienced Risk and Project Controls professionals while continuing to develop your technical capability across QSRA, QCRA and wider quantitative risk analysis.

There are clear opportunities for career progression and increased responsibility, whether that means leading larger packages of work, taking greater ownership of client relationships or progressing towards programme-level risk leadership.
