Job description
Community Mentor

Location: Community-based (daily travel across your designated area)
Contract: Full Time, Permanent
Salary: £30,000–£40,000

Make a Difference Every Day

At Progress Community, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of the challenges they face. We're looking for a compassionate, resilient and motivated Community Mentor to join our growing team and help transform the lives of young people who require additional support to engage with education.

This is a rewarding role where no two days are the same. You'll work directly with learners in community settings, supporting them to overcome barriers, build confidence, improve attendance and achieve positive educational and personal outcomes.

What You'll Do

As a Community Mentor, you will:

  • Build positive, trusted relationships with young people through one-to-one mentoring.

  • Support learners with their emotional wellbeing, confidence, resilience and personal development.

  • Help improve attendance and re-engage learners who are at risk of becoming disengaged from education.

  • Carry out community-based mentoring sessions, welfare checks and home visits where appropriate.

  • Work closely with parents, carers, schools, local authorities and external professionals to provide coordinated support.

  • Safeguard children and young people, responding appropriately to concerns and maintaining accurate records.

  • Develop learner plans, monitor progress and celebrate achievements.

  • Support learners with transition planning, careers, further education, training and employment opportunities.

  • Maintain accurate documentation using digital systems and contribute to high-quality service delivery.

What We're Looking For

You'll be someone who genuinely enjoys supporting young people and believes in helping them reach their full potential.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Experience working with children or young people, ideally within education, youth work, SEND, SEMH or Alternative Provision.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

  • A good understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.

  • The ability to motivate, inspire and positively influence young people.

  • Strong organisational skills and confidence managing your own workload.

  • GCSE Grade 4/C (or equivalent) in English and Maths.

  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle, with the ability to travel daily.

A relevant qualification in education, youth work, social care or a related field is desirable but not essential.

Why Join Progress Community?

At Progress Community, you'll become part of a passionate team dedicated to changing lives through education and mentoring. We invest in our people and provide ongoing training, professional development and opportunities to grow your career.

We offer:

  • Competitive salary of £30,000–£40,000

  • Full training and ongoing professional development

  • Supportive and collaborative working environment

  • Opportunities for career progression

  • The chance to make a genuine and lasting difference in the lives of young people

If you're passionate about supporting young people and want to be part of an organisation that values compassion, inclusion and excellence, we'd love to hear from you.

Please note: This role requires daily travel within the community and is subject to an Enhanced DBS check with Children's Barred List clearance. Progress Community is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all colleagues to share this commitment.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
