Job summary
We are looking for a dynamic, motivated and enthusiastic Registered Midwife who is interested and experienced in Safeguarding unborn babies and children, to join the Safeguarding Midwifery Team at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust.

Flexibility will be required to work across the adults, children's and midwifery safeguarding teams where required.

This post offers an exciting opportunity for a Registered Midwife who relishes the challenge of promoting and ensuring the protection and safety of babies and children.

The post holder will work as a member of the Midwifery Safeguarding team to support the delivery of services to staff involved in the safeguarding of unborn/babies and children, including supporting liaison between hospital and community services. The successful candidate will need to be able to receive, convey and present complex highly confidential information.

The post holder will work in conjunction with the Trust wide Safeguarding Team to deliver a high-quality service of safeguarding expertise to the Trust. They will provide professional advice, support and education to the multi-professional team, patient and carers and ensure that the Trust meets statutory safeguarding requirements.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will need to display excellent communication skills, be highly motivated and self-organised.

The applicant will need to have experience with child protection procedures.

The post holder will also be required to deliver safeguarding education and training to staff where there is an identified need.

The post holder will work as a member of the Midwifery Safeguarding team to support the delivery of services to staff involved in the safeguarding of unborn/babies and children, including supporting liaison between hospital and community services.

The post holder will act as a resource for members of the multidisciplinary team and facilitate an environment of learning to promote the development of staff.

Job responsibilities
Clinical
To assist with raising the profile of safeguarding adults, children and unborn babies across NUH. A working awareness of the Childrens Act 1989/2004 and Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026.

The post holder will work in conjunction with the Trust wide Safeguarding Team to deliver a high quality service of safeguarding expertise to the Trust. They will provide professional advice, support and education to the multi-professional team, patient and carers and ensure that the Trust meets statutory safeguarding requirements.

The post holder is responsible for implementing national recommendations and guidance for good practice in conjunction with the Named Midwife for Safeguarding.

Convey and present highly complex and sensitive information written and verbal, formally and informally as appropriate. Ensure that when applicable information is maintained and kept in an appropriate place.

Training & Qualifications
Essential
  • First level registered Midwife with UK NMC registration.
  • Evidence of relevant post registration personal, professional and academic development.
  • Attendance at Safeguarding training within health or interagency

Desirable
  • Experience of delivering training
  • Supervision training/experience

  • Sound and proven knowledge of safeguarding children including The Children Act 1989/2004 and Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026.
  • Experience of participation in multi-agency working/relationships.
  • Sound knowledge regarding the recognition and impact of abuse/neglect.
  • Experience of managing Child Protection cases concerning unborn/babies/children that are vulnerable.
  • Experience of teaching within the clinical areas.
  • Multi-agency working- attendance and contribution to multi-agency meeting ie Case Conferences.

Desirable
  • Experience of autonomous working in relation to safeguarding and handling individual cases.
  • Experience of working within a safeguarding team
  • Experience of developing and delivering educational programmes
  • Proven ability to manage complex and emotive problems

Communication and Relationship Skills

  • Able to present and receive relevant clinical information to a professional audience.
  • Able to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to staff, patients/clients.
  • Can produce timely, accurate written/electronic documents
  • Can minimise interpersonal conflict and barriers of communication
  • Evidence of negotiations, influencing staff.
  • Ability to provide emotional support for staff caring for women in difficult circumstances
  • To be assertive and act as an advocate for unborn/baby/child/mother where required.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

Desirable
  • Experience of participation in multiagency safeguarding meetings.
  • Experience of providing advice to other professionals.

Analytical and Judgement Skills
Essential
  • Able to respond to problems/situations and to ensure effective interventions in place.
  • Able to independently assess and review cases within the remit of professional practice in relation to Safeguarding and information sharing (multi-agency).
  • Able to make decisions on safeguarding issues involving complex facts or situations
  • Demonstrate an ability to assess, plan, deliver, prioritise and evaluate patient care.
  • Able to respond effectively to problem situations and ensure interventions are put in place.

Desirable
  • Experience of writing reports for complex safeguarding meetings such as Child Protection case Conferences.
  • Writing statements for court

Physical Skills
Essential
  • Able to undertake duties
  • Commute between NUH Campus's, attend external meetings off site e.g. inter-agency case conferences and in some circumstances transporting staff.
  • Able to use standard computer systems, including teaching and training aids e.g. PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrate flexibility in working patterns and practices
  • Flexibility to work across Adult, and Children's Safeguarding Teams as necessary.
  • Demonstrate creative and innovative approaches to practice.
  • Enhanced DBS check.
  • Demonstrate commitment to team working but able to practice autonomously.

  • Evidence of writing for publication.
  • Evidence of innovative ways of developing the service in respect to safeguarding unborn and newborn babies.
