Job summary
The Band 6 Outpatients Sister/Charge Nurse is responsible for providing clinical leadership and operational management within the outpatient department, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care. Based within the Heartlands Treatment Centre (HTC), a modern purpose-built outpatient facility opened in 2022, the post holder will lead and support nursing and support staff, coordinate daily clinic activity, manage staffing and rotas, and work collaboratively with a wide range of healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality service delivery. The role includes responsibility for workforce management, patient flow, quality improvement, clinical governance, staff development, and maintaining a positive patient experience while supporting the ongoing development of outpatient services.

This is for 22.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job
Act as a professional role model, maintaining high standards of behaviour, communication, and clinical practice.

Provide day-to-day leadership and support to the nursing team, promoting a positive learning and development culture.

Ensure staff work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and deliver care in line with Trust policies and standards.

Conduct appraisals, support personal development plans, and assist staff with professional revalidation requirements.

Support and lead team meetings, ensuring key information, actions, and updates are communicated effectively.

Promote a safe working environment through health and safety compliance, risk assessments, and adherence to procedures.

Proactively manage risks, incidents, and safety concerns, ensuring learning and feedback are shared with staff.

Support safeguarding processes, including Mental Capacity Act, DoLS, Prevent, and escalation of concerns as required.

Maintain effective communication with senior nursing teams and escalate issues that may impact patient safety, staff wellbeing, or service delivery.

Contribute to service improvement, quality initiatives, and the delivery of a safe, effective, and patient-centred outpatient service.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Adult Nurse on the NMC register

Desirable
  • Health care management / leadership qualification

Experience
Essential
  • Substantial post registration experience working in a complex health care setting / Acute NHS care setting supervising / mentoring junior staff
  • Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD
  • Can demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council ( NMC ) standards for student supervision and assessment
  • Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
  • Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality /acute care setting, including the supervision /education of junior staff
  • Experience of mentoring undergraduate students
  • Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift /area of department
  • Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice.
