Job summary
To provide a Specialist Clinical Psychology Service to patients, carers and colleagues within the Adult Inherited Metabolic Disorders (IMD) service of North Bristol NHS Trust. To be familiar with the psychological issues facing individuals with Inherited Metabolic Disorders in order to provide specialist psychological input (both inpatient and outpatient) to individuals across the adult age range, their Carers and colleagues. This will include individual and group based psychological therapy and psychological assessments as appropriate and required. To facilitate and disseminate effective evidence based psychological practice within the Adult IMD Team and Service by supporting psychologically informed patient information, protocols, guidelines and procedures implemented by all members of the team.

Main duties of the job

Job description
Job responsibilities
The Adult IMD Service at the Bristol Group manages patients with a variety of different inherited disorders. The post holder will work with adults living with IMD to help them to manage and make psychological adjustments to the complex, severe and enduring challenges and changes attendant to their condition such as physical, sensory and neurological impairments and disabilities both developmental and acquired. In the course of their work the post holder will encounter a range of presenting problems and needs (including complex emotional dysfunction, self-harm, aggression and challenging behaviour, cognitive impairment, severe interpersonal problems, social disabilities), often in cases where motivation and engagement is poor or where understanding or acceptance by the patient or their condition is constrained by psychological, cognitive, linguistic or other factors. The postholder will also work with the patients support networks, families and other natural carers. The post holder must have an appropriate level of professional training and experience to work towards highly complex assessments and interventions with the majority of patients who access the Psychology service, ultimately with a high level of autonomy. The post holder is will be newly qualified and ready to work towards working at band 8a through a structured programme of support. They will then be personally accountable for their clinical decisions and required to ensure appropriate supervision arrangements support this responsibility
