Job description
Experienced Electrical Engineers: Register Your Interest in Future Opportunities at National Grid

Invest in your future. Become a Senior Authorised Person.

You've already built a strong foundation in electrical engineering. Now it's time to take your career further. National Grid is investing in the future of Britain's electricity transmission network, and we're looking for experienced Electrical Engineers who are ready to develop specialist high-voltage expertise through one of the most comprehensive engineering training programmes in the industry. The training programme takes commitment, but the rewards are significant. Once qualified, you'll take on greater technical responsibility, lead complex engineering activities and become part of the team delivering the infrastructure that powers millions of homes and businesses across Great Britain.

Why invest in your future with National Grid?

This opportunity is about more than your next job-it's about building a long-term career with one of the UK's leading engineering organisations.

When you join us, you'll receive:
  • Starting salary of £47,442 - £55,000 pa depending on experience while completing your training
  • London Metropolitan £58,412 - 65,970 / London Inner £59,512 - £67,070 pa
  • Outer London £52,382 - £59,470 pa North Kent, Rayleigh, Essex, Herts.
  • A structured 24-36 month development programme designed to prepare you for the Senior Authorised Person role
  • Salary progression and an additional SAP allowance once qualified
  • Industry-leading technical training that builds on your existing electrical engineering experience
  • A 37-hour working week, Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm
  • 26 days' annual leave plus 8 statutory days
  • Pension contributions of up to 18%
  • Paid overtime, standby allowance, call-out payments and annual bonus opportunity

Your development journey

Over the next 24-36 months, you'll combine practical experience with structured classroom learning to develop the knowledge, operational competence and safety authorisations needed to work safely on National Grid's high-voltage transmission network. You'll learn from experienced engineers, gain exposure to a wide variety of operational activities and build the confidence to make sound engineering decisions in safety-critical environments.

Training takes place on site and at our specialist training facility at Eakring in Nottinghamshire, together with other operational locations. This may involve occasional short stays away from home, fully supported by National Grid. Throughout the programme, you'll steadily build your capability, preparing you for a role with greater responsibility and influence across the electricity transmission network.

Where your training will take you

Once you've successfully completed the programme and achieved Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status, you'll play a leading role in delivering safe and reliable electricity transmission across Great Britain.

As a qualified SAP, you'll:
  • Lead teams of fitters and contractors carrying out work on high-voltage substations
  • Plan and coordinate complex maintenance and capital projects
  • Prepare and approve risk assessments and method statements
  • Manage electrical safety and operational risk
  • Take responsibility for safety-critical activities on the transmission network
  • Apply your engineering expertise to solve technical challenges and support network reliability
  • Involved with emergency call outs - on standby rota

This is where your training pays off-giving you the opportunity to work on some of the UK's most critical infrastructure while continuing to develop your technical and leadership skills.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

We're keen to hear from experienced Electrical Engineers who have:
  • A minimum NVQ Level 3 or ONC qualification in Electrical Engineering
  • Practical experience installing, maintaining, repairing or fault-finding on electrical plant and equipment
  • The ability to interpret electrical schematics and engineering drawings
  • Experience preparing or working to risk assessments and method statements
  • Confidence using electrical test equipment, interpreting maintenance results and making sound engineering decisions
  • A willingness to attend training at Eakring in Nottinghamshire and other National Grid locations, including occasional overnight stays
  • The flexibility to join an emergency standby rota once qualified, with the ability to live within approximately 45 minutes of your operational base
  • A full UK driving licence

It would be great if you also have:
  • High-voltage engineering experience
  • Experience supervising engineering activities or leading teams
  • NEBOSH or equivalent health and safety qualifications

Please note that visa sponsorship and relocation packages are not available for this role.

Build the career you've been working towards

If you're ready to invest in your development and build specialist expertise that will set you apart, we'd love to hear from you.

Register your interest today and we'll contact you as future Electrical Engineer opportunities become available across National Grid.
