Job description

NLC3 £25,971 - £26,991 (Pro Rata)

These posts are open to young people aged 18 – 24 years who reside in North Lanarkshire and have been a resident of, or previously ‘looked after’ by a local authority.

This is an exciting opportunity offering a training and employment programme within Children & Families as part of the Youth Guarantee Programme. Working alongside key staff in CLD, you will support the Children & Families Team within Education and Families in the delivery of the Independent Care Review “Keeping the Promise”.

North Lanarkshire Council is committed to delivering positive outcomes for all children and young people who are or are at risk of conflict with the law and to address the call to action from the Promise to eliminate the disproportionate criminalisation of care experienced young people which impacts so significantly on wider life chances.

The Assistant Support Workers will provide a peer mentoring service which offers support to children and young people whose needs are not able to be met by universal services. The aim of the service is to use relationship-based practice to support children and young people, who are often disengaged and marginalised, to become engaged in community supports to promote positive destinations. Mentors will be an important contributor to a whole family approach and will support children and young people to improve their outcomes on a one to one or groupwork basis.

An enthusiastic and motivated individual, you will have some knowledge of the youth justice and/or care system and its context within Scotland and an understanding of The Promise and the ability to engage and build positive relationships with children, young people and families. Successful candidates will have good communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team.

You must have a relevant qualification at minimum of SVQ 1 / Standard Grades, O Grades or equivalent and/or accredited training appropriate to the learning programme being delivered and previous experience of working or volunteering with vulnerable children and young people and their families/carers. You must also lived experience of youth justice and/or care.

You will require to become a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme member prior to starting this post.

*For all casual/sessional roles, you will receive 12.1% of your hourly rate for every hour worked in total recompense for annual leave, including public holidays. These rates will be indicated separately on your payslip. You will only be paid for the hours that you work.
