About the Team

The Structural Economics team is at the core of the Treasury’s function as an economics Ministry, providing economic analysis, briefing and policy advice on the issues facing the UK economy. We play a central role in analysing developments in the economy and risks to the outlook. The team leads on our macroeconomic advice on labour market policy; regional analysis; the supply side of the economy; and human capital and migration; climate economics and general equilibrium modelling.

About the Job

In this role, you will:

• Lead analytical projects on longer-term and structural issues facing the UK economy, responding to economic and policy priorities through managing and delivering impactful analysis and advice.
• Lead on application and development of HM Treasury’s overlapping generations model (UK OLG) across a range of policy issues. UK OLG is a recent addition to the team’s modelling toolkit and is used for the analysis of the impact of shocks, trends and policies on the UK macroeconomy in the long term. It provides a framework for general equilibrium analysis which reflects the way households change their behaviour over their lifecycle. The post-holder is likely to also have opportunities to work across the branch’s suite of macroeconomic models, including Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling.
• Build expertise on climate macroeconomics through conducting qualitative and quantitate analysis. While the post-holder can expect to work flexibly, applying their analytical skills across a range of structural issues facing the UK economy, climate is likely to remain an ongoing focus of the branch’s work.
• Communicate economic analysis effectively across the department and government, including contributing to presentations and written advice for senior leaders.
• Build and maintain collaborative relationships across the department, government and externally. Work closely with analytical and policy colleagues in the department to ensure analysis influences policy development and work across government and with external stakeholders to deliver HMT’s strategic priorities.
• Support Economics Group’s corporate agenda, promoting the Group’s wider objectives and making it an excellent place to work.

About You

You will have a degree in economics (or equivalent analytical qualification). A postgraduate degree in economics or experience in applying econometric analysis and quantitative modelling, would be advantageous.

You will be able to apply economic theory and use economic models to synthesise evidence to deliver high quality analysis; communicate evidence and analysis clearly and concisely, including distilling key messages and uncertainties from technical work; establish effective relationships with people who have different roles and perspectives to deliver on shared objectives and work independently to manage competing deadlines and objectives and deliver timely and high-quality analysis.
