National Highways have an excellent opportunity for a Lead Operational Technology Specialist: Information and Control Products to join our Digital Services team

The Lead OT Technology Specialist: Information & Control Products will be the leading technical specialist for support of roadside technology products and systems within the information and control services category. These services provide Operations the ability to safely manage and maintain the Strategic Road Network (SRN), control traffic flow and inform our customers on a day-to-day basis.

Please note this position can be based from any of our UK offices however travel to other offices to attend team meetings will be required.

  • Act as the technical authority for Information & Control products, providing technical leadership, governance and assurance to ensure solutions are safe, compliant and aligned with National Highways standards.
  • Define and develop the technical strategy, architecture, specifications and technology roadmap for Information & Control services, driving innovation, improved reliability and enhanced safety across the Strategic Road Network.
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders across National Highways to shape technical proposals, influence business cases and provide expert guidance that supports informed decision-making and future investment.
  • Lead engagement with suppliers and procurement teams, ensuring new technologies, commercial solutions and system designs align with long-term architecture, open standards and organisational objectives.
  • Build capability across the Operational Technology community by mentoring colleagues, sharing technical expertise and translating complex technical issues into clear, accessible information for a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Provide technical input and expertise to support assurance activities, including testing and witnessing of products, working with the supply chain to ensure the appropriate standards and specifications are met.

About you

  • Proven experience in Operational Technology (OT), Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) or other mission-critical environments, with a strong understanding of safety, resilience and high-availability systems.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Information & Control technologies, including the development of technical specifications, standards and architectures, with experience of system integration and technical governance.
  • Experience working with technologies such as message signs, signals, CCTV, Stopped Vehicle Detection, vehicle detection systems or other operational transport technologies. Knowledge of frameworks such as UTMC, NTCIP or DATEX II would be advantageous.
  • The ability to translate complex business requirements into practical technical solutions, influence technical decisions and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience developing technology strategies, roadmaps or standards, with the ability to provide technical leadership, resolve complex technical challenges and ensure services meet business and operational needs.
  • Working knowledge of NMCS2 over both IP and RS485 roadside infrastructure hierarchical networks and digital transmission standards, specifically how our operational technology is integrated with centralised traffic management systems.
