Working Location

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 3 years' laboratory testing experience in the petrochemical industry for chemists.
    • Minimum 4 years' experience required for environment chemists.
  • Language: Fluent in both written and spoken English.
  • Technical Skills: Computer literate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect and analyze the quality of raw materials using raw material testing methods to ensure compliance with QC specifications.
  • Prepare and implement non-compliant raw material reports and propose solutions or alternatives to mitigate future non-compliance cases.
  • Examine and evaluate received feedstock quality against QC specifications using approved testing methods and procedures.
  • Prepare and implement feedstock non-compliance reports and recommend solutions for recurring issues.
  • Perform tests on finished products at various phases (on-line production, silo, bagging) using QC testing methods to verify compliance with product specifications and meet customer requirements.
  • Conduct re-tests and prepare non-compliance reports as needed to ensure production and logistics teams are aware of issues and seek resolutions for off-grade products.
  • Collect gas and liquid samples from olefin plants at various production stages according to the analysis plan; perform tests using gas chromatographs and chemical methods to monitor process consistency and variations.
  • Conduct re-tests and prepare abnormality reports to notify production of process variations and ensure corrective measures are taken.
  • Obtain, inspect, and analyze ethylene and Sulphur samples against QC specifications using product QC test manuals to ensure standards are achieved.
  • Obtain, inspect, and analyze samples of wastewater, solids, and effluents for characteristics and pollutants such as COD, BOD, total hydrocarbon, and heavy metals.
  • Adhere to all relevant departmental policies, processes, standard operating procedures, and instructions for consistent and controlled operations.
  • Assist in preparing timely and accurate departmental statements and reports according to requirements, policies, and standards.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, health, safety, and environmental procedures and controls to guarantee employee safety, product/service quality, and environmental compliance.
  • Perform other related duties or assignments as directed.

Chemist Scope

Pertains to petrochemical laboratory experience with an academic background in chemistry.

  • Samples Tested:
    • Wastewater, process water, ballast water from ships; analysis of COD, BOD, oil & grease (HEM, FTIR), TSS, TDS, TKN, total phenols, hardness, microbiological screening (sludge quality), total iron, phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrite, sulfides, sulphates, hydrazine, chloride, chlorine dioxide, total free chlorine, COD by UV-Visible spectrophotometer per standard methods (APHA).
  • Equipment Knowledge Required:
    • UV-Visible spectrophotometer
    • FTIR
    • BOD apparatus
    • Flame photometers
    • Turbidity meters
    • pH and conductivity meters
    • Titrators
    • Ion Chromatograph
    • TKN analyzer
    • GC with Purge & Trap (for VOC and benzene analysis in wastewater)
    • TOC analyzer
  • Preparation of standards and chemicals for routine wastewater analysis following APHA guidelines.
  • LIMS awareness.
  • Collection of wastewater, water, chemical, and gas samples; ethylene import ships and LPG sample collection from different plants and units.
  • General laboratory housekeeping and adherence to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
  • General laboratory safety awareness.
