Job description
Support Worker (Specialist Secondary School)

Location: Blackley
Agency: Teaching Personnel
Start Date: September 2026

Make a Difference as a Classroom Support Worker in Specialist Education

Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated and resilient Support Worker to join a specialist secondary school in Blackley from September 2026.

This is a full-time, long-term opportunity for an experienced support professional who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive outcomes. While the role draws upon support work skills such as relationship building, emotional support, and behaviour management, it is firmly a school-based Teaching Assistant and classroom support position, working alongside teachers and other support staff throughout the school day.

We are looking for someone who can combine a calm, nurturing approach with confidence supporting pupils with additional needs in an educational environment.

About the School

This specialist secondary school supports pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and caters for a range of additional needs, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
  • Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (CLDD)
  • Sensory Processing Difficulties
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs

The school provides a structured, supportive, and highly personalised learning environment where pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, independence, resilience, and essential life skills. Staff work collaboratively to ensure every pupil receives the support they need to make meaningful educational and personal progress.

The Role

As a Support Worker, you will provide classroom support to pupils whose additional needs can impact their learning, communication, social development, and emotional regulation.

Working as part of the wider classroom team, you will support teachers in delivering lessons, help pupils access learning activities, and provide encouragement and guidance throughout the school day. The role involves supporting both education and wellbeing, helping pupils develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in school.

This position would suit individuals with backgrounds in support work, care, youth work, behavioural support, or SEND, who are looking to apply their skills within a specialist educational setting.

No two days are the same, making this an extremely rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys building positive relationships and making a genuine difference.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom-based support for pupils with additional learning, communication, sensory, and behavioural needs
  • Support teachers and teaching assistants in delivering engaging and accessible learning activities
  • Build positive and trusting relationships that encourage pupil engagement and participation
  • Assist pupils in working towards their EHCP outcomes and individual learning targets
  • Support emotional regulation, wellbeing, and positive behaviour throughout the school day
  • Implement behaviour support strategies and de-escalation techniques where appropriate
  • Promote independence, communication skills, and social development
  • Adapt learning activities and resources to meet individual needs
  • Support pupils during transitions, breaktimes, and structured activities
  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment
  • Record observations and provide feedback on pupil progress to teaching staff
  • Support personal care, mobility, and medical needs where required

About You

We're looking for a compassionate and proactive individual who understands the importance of positive relationships and consistent support in helping young people thrive.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience working with children or young people in support work, education, care, youth work, residential care, or SEND settings
  • Experience supporting individuals with ASC, SEMH needs, PMLD, CLDD, sensory needs, or other additional needs
  • An understanding of behaviour as a form of communication
  • Confidence using positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies
  • The ability to remain calm, patient, and resilient in challenging situations
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience supporting emotional wellbeing and independence
  • A proactive, flexible, and solution-focused approach
  • Team Teach training or experience using positive handling approaches (desirable)
  • A commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and helping pupils achieve their full potential
