Job description

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: £21,970.00 (TAX EXEMPT) per annum Start date: flexible and subject to agreement with the successful candidate. We are pleased to offer a one-year Junior Clinical Training Scholarship in Small Animal Primary Care, designed for veterinary graduates who wish to develop their knowledge and clinical skills, broadening their experience and gaining a deeper understanding of small animal primary and contextualised care. This exciting new internship offers qualified veterinarians the opportunity to undertake high-quality postgraduate training in small animal primary care in a leading veterinary clinical and educational environment. Through hands‑on first‑opinion clinical experience and case management, scholars will develop their skills and confidence across a range of settings that will encourage understanding of a Spectrum of Care (SOC) approach to veterinary medicine. Through active participation in the Queens Veterinary School Hospital (QVSH) General Practice Service, RSPCA Cambridge Clinic, and out‑of‑hours care, scholars will gain experience managing a diverse small animal caseload while developing their clinical, diagnostic, problem‑solving, communication, and technical skills. Our collaboration with the RSPCA Cambridge Clinic provides a unique opportunity in this charity medicine context that will allow the scholar to develop an adaptable approach to veterinary care that integrates clinical expertise with evidence‑based veterinary medicine, while accommodating real‑world case complexity. This programme provides the scholar with direct exposure to specialist care through its close integration with the QVSH referral services. This unique environment offers the scholar the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence through primary case responsibility, including consultation, diagnostic investigations, treatments and client communications in a supportive academic environment, preparing scholars for further clinical training and a wide range of veterinary career pathways. We are seeking someone to join the team as soon as possible; however, we can be flexible and accommodate the successful candidates notice period. What We Offer * Competitive tax‑free stipend including onsite accommodation (available for £300 per month including bills) in Central Cambridge * CPD allowance and encouragement to attend and present at scientific meetings * Good work‑life balance with manageable out of hours duties * Academic opportunities, e.g. teaching Cambridge students during rotations and College supervision opportunities; weekly department research and clinical seminars; journal and book clubs * Proven track‑record with publications and research projects with guidance on presentation and scientific writing skills * Supportive supervisors: opportunities for progress meetings, interview practice, provision of professional references and CV/cover letter proof reading by experienced primary care clinicians * University library and extensive journal access Who Can Apply Applicants must be Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons or hold a veterinary degree that qualifies them for membership. Experience in a UK‑based primary care small animal practice would be an asset, but new and recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Please note: The ability to take up this Scholarship is contingent upon you being able to evidence your right to work in the UK, or through gaining the right to work via the UK immigration system. Evidence will need to be provided before an offer can be made. Regrettably, this Scholarship is not suitable for sponsorship via the Skilled Worker or Temporary Worker visa routes as the minimum requirements cannot be met.
