Job description
Job summary
Please note: at this stage, the role is open only to colleagues currently employed within Kent and Medway NHS Trusts, the Kent and Medway Integrated Care Board (ICB) and Medway Community Healthcare. Nursing vacancies are also open to Student Nurses and Newly Qualified Nurses

Join an innovative and responsive service that makes a real difference when patients need urgent support most. The East Kent Night Nursing Service delivers specialist care to patients in their own homes overnight, providing urgent clinical interventions that cannot safely wait until the following day. Supporting people across East Kent, the team responds to referrals from NHS 111, South East Coast Ambulance Service , Out of Hours GPs, and directly from patients, relatives and carers via our Local Referral Unit.

We focus on delivering high-quality care. As part of the wider Urgent Care Services, we help people remain safely at home, reducing avoidable hospital admissions and supporting timely hospital discharge. Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, we believe home is often the best place for recovery.

We work alongside East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust to develop virtual wards, enabling patients with acute respiratory conditions and long-term illnesses to receive monitoring and clinical care at home. This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward-thinking service that combines compassionate nursing, integrated working and innovative technology to improve community healthcare.

Main duties of the job
This is a varied and rewarding opportunity for a motivated nurse who enjoys autonomous practice, clinical decision-making and delivering outstanding patient-centred care. Following a comprehensive induction, you will play a key role in triaging overnight referrals, undertaking telephone assessments, determining clinical urgency, allocating visits and signposting patients to the most appropriate services when required.

Working independently and often as a lone practitioner, you will assess, plan, implement and evaluate holistic care for patients with a range of urgent and complex needs. You will undertake clinical interventions including catheterisation, intravenous medication administration, syringe driver management and verification of expected death. Alongside direct patient care, you will contribute to integrated care planning, service development and multidisciplinary working to achieve the best outcomes for patients.

The role also offers opportunities to support junior staff, contribute to quality improvement initiatives and help shape future service delivery. While experience in community or hospice nursing is desirable, we are equally interested in nurses who are confident, adaptable and passionate about high-quality care in a dynamic urgent care environment. If you thrive on variety, value professional autonomy and want to make a meaningful difference every night, we would love to hear from you.

Additional Working Pattern: Night Hours, including weekends
