POST:Head of Technology and Design MANAGEMENT ALLOWANCE:3 Teaching Allowances STATUS: Permanent EFFECTIVE DATE:01/09/26 CORE PURPOSE To provide outstanding professional leadership and management of the Technology and Design Department, securing high-quality teaching, effective deployment of resources and continuous improvement in standards of learning, achievement and pupil outcomes. The department has a broad and dynamic curriculum remit, encompassing not only Technology and Design but also related vocational and applied qualifications, including Construction, Engineering, and Occupational Studies in Engineering and Construction. The successful candidate will be expected to lead, develop and promote excellence across this diverse curriculum area, ensuring that all pupils experience engaging, relevant and high-quality learning opportunities that prepare them for further study, employment and lifelong success. The Head of Department must possess the knowledge, understanding and leadership skills necessary to secure continual improvement across all aspects of departmental provision. This knowledge and understanding will be both subject-specific and generic to the leadership role and will evolve over time. It is therefore essential that the post holder demonstrates a commitment to ongoing professional learning and remains fully informed of developments within their specialist areas and the wider educational landscape. STRATEGIC DIRECTION AND DEVELOPMENT The Head of Department co-ordinates, with the support of colleagues and within the context of the Colleges aims and policies, the development and implementation of College policies in order to raise achievement and improve the quality of education provided. The Head of Department will be expected: to provide leadership within the College community as a whole and to ensure agreed College policies are implemented. to contribute effectively to the development of a positive ethos in which all pupils have access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum and which contributes to pupils spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development and in preparing pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. to attend Head of Department meetings and to be involved in the development of the College curriculum in consultation with other members of staff. to advise the Senior Leadership Team on matters relating to the Technology and Design Department, including Technology and Design, Engineering, Construction and associated vocational and applied qualifications. to lead and co-ordinate all curricular, vocational and enrichment activities within the department. to liaise with other departments in the College. to implement the departmental development plan in the context of the College development plan and to set and meet challenging and realistic targets for improvement at departmental level. to develop and strengthen links between the department and local, regional and national employers, industry partners, training providers and higher education institutions, particularly within the engineering, construction, manufacturing and technology sectors, to ensure that staff have an awareness and are up-to-date about practice in local companies and to develop forums whereby pupils have the opportunity to know and work with people who are positive role models from the business world. LEARNING AND TEACHING The Head of Department seeks to develop, with the support of colleagues, effective ways of overcoming barriers to learning and sustaining effective teaching through the analysis and assessment of pupils needs, by monitoring the quality of teaching and standards of pupils achievements, and by setting targets for improvements. The Head of Department will be expected:- to create and maintain an environment and a code of behaviour which promotes and secures good teaching, effective learning, high standards of achievement, good behaviour and discipline. to encourage a positive attitude to the Technology and Design Department on the part of pupils of all abilities. to determine, organise and implement the curriculum and its assessment; monitor and evaluate them in order to identify and act on areas for improvement to research, evaluate and implement high-quality academic, vocational and applied courses that meet pupil needs, respond to developments in industry and support progression to further and higher education, apprenticeships and employment. to ensure that improvements in literacy, numeracy and information and communication technology are priority targets for all pupils, including those with special educational needs. to be responsible for monitoring and evaluating the quality of teaching and standards of learning and achievement of all pupils, including those with special educational or linguistic needs, in order to set and meet challenging, realistic targets for improvement. This will involve visiting classes, classroom observations and sampling of work from different classes on a regular basis. to promote the study of Technology and Design throughout the College. to be responsible for the development of schemes of work and lesson plans for all courses in line with Whole School Development Plan. to be responsible for the recording and monitoring of internal and external examination results within the department. to be responsible for the development and use of resources within the teaching of Technology and Design. to enhance learning and teaching through the use of ICT in Technology and Design. LEADING AND MANAGING STAFF The Head of Department supports staff involved in working with pupils by ensuring all those involved have the information necessary to secure improvements in teaching and learning and sustain staff motivation. This involves leading, motivating, supporting, challenging and developing staff to secure improvement. The Head of Department will be expected:- to maximise the contribution of staff to improving the quality of education provided and standards achieved and ensure that constructive working relationships are formed between staff and pupils to lead professional development of staff through example; support and co-ordinate the provision of high quality professional development by methods such as coaching, drawing on other resources or expertise where appropriate, for example, higher education institutions, ELBs and subject associations to deploy staff and teaching groups in consultation with the Senior Leadership Team. to be responsible for Health and Safety within the Technology and Design Department. (See below). to be responsible for the expectations held of students, standards of work and for the assessment of all work in Technology and Design. to be responsible for the discipline in the department and in the departmental area. to draw up a responsibility structure with job descriptions whenever necessary. to organise the arrangements of external and internal examinations where necessary. to ensure that cover work for absent staff is set. to co-ordinate the initial stage (Student Teachers), the induction of, and the early professional development of new teachers. to ensure that the departmental team keeps abreast of current developments in Education in general and their own subject area in particular. to organise and lead meetings of the department, including those on Inset days. to deal with departmental staff problems. EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE DEPLOYMENT OF STAFF AND RESOURCES The Head of Department deploys people and resources efficiently and effectively to meet specific objectives in line with the Whole School Development Plan and financial context. He/She identifies with colleagues appropriate resources to support the teaching of pupils and monitors their use in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, and safety. The Head of Department will be expected: to set appropriate priorities for expenditure, allocate funds and ensure effective administration and control. to manage, monitor and review the range, quality, quantity and use of all available resources in order to improve the quality of education, improve pupils achievements, ensure efficiency and secure value for money. to be responsible for the allocation of budgets, and the ordering of stock and an effective system of stock control. to ensure that the teaching staff, classroom assistants, technicians and students are aware of the Safety Procedures to be followed in the Technology and Design Department. to ensure that the services and supplies in the department are adequately kept and maintained. to ensure that proper procedures are followed and help sought in case of an accident in the Technology and Design Department. to ensure that adequate care is taken with regards to electrical equipment within the department. Technicians (where applicable) to ensure that a well organised and efficient technician support system exists. to ensure that there are proper channels of communications between the teaching and technical staff and that a healthy and supportive working environment prevails. While these duties reflect the present needs of the College, it will be appreciated that these change from time to time and if alterations are necessary they will be carried out after consultation with the teachers concerned.
