Job description

Infleqtion is a global quantum technology company solving the world’s most challenging problems. The company harnesses quantum mechanics to build and integrate quantum computers, sensors, and networks. From fundamental physics to leading edge commercial products, Infleqtion enables “quantum everywhere” through our ecosystem of devices and platforms.

Location

Infleqtion has offices in the USA, United Kingdom and Australia. This is a full-time position split between our Kidlington, Oxford office and the National Quantum Computing Centre, Harwell. Work from home permitted up to 2 days per week based on business needs and manager approval. Candidate will need to be able to travel independently to these locations, as required.

Position Summary

As part of our strategy for growth at Infleqtion UK, we are expanding our engineering team and recruiting an Embedded DevOps engineer.

For this role, you will bring a mix of technical skills, problem-solving ability and effective communication, playing a pivotal role in development velocity and reliability for our quantum research, sensor development and productionisation of cutting-edge systems.

This role involves a combination of development and maintenance of robust testing and deployment processes including hardware-in-the-loop testing and build pipelines for integrated software, firmware and gateware. The role will be instrumental in defining our version control, auditing and engineering procedures around delivering production software for deployed systems. Additionally, the role will involve some maintenance of physical on-site hardware, network management, server administration to support our in-house research labs. The successful candidate will ideally possess a solid technical background in both systems engineering and software development.

Job Responsibilities

  • Software Deployment: Manage containers and orchestrate CI/CD pipelines for efficient software deployment, robust testing and traceable updates.
  • Hardware-in-the-loop configuration: Support both the hardware and software teams by managing configurations of multiple networked systems being used for development, testing & commissioning.
  • Infrastructure as code: Design, develop, and maintain IaC solutions and implement CI/CD pipelines to automate deployment processes.
  • Software security: Define and own software security procedures that govern secure code development and deployment for software, firmware and gateware.
  • 'System-down' planning and response. Own lab system management and coordinate response to efficiently maintain high up-times. Plan and implement system backup policies to ensure swift recovery.
  • Collaboration and Documentation: Collaborate with both software developers and hardware engineers in a lab environment, documenting processes and system configurations for ongoing projects.

Requirements

  • Embedded DevOps experience: Demonstrable experience developing and maintaining CI/CD, build, test and release processes for systems that combine software with embedded hardware, firmware or FPGA gateware.
  • Linux and automation expertise: Strong Linux systems administration skills, including networking, permissions, service management and troubleshooting, together with proficiency in automation and scripting using Python, Bash or similar languages.
  • Configuration and release management: Practical experience with Git-based development workflows, automated testing, artifact repositories and versioned releases, with an understanding of how to maintain traceability between source code, build environments, deployed software and physical hardware configurations.
  • Infrastructure and deployment tooling: Hands-on experience with container technologies and infrastructure or configuration management tools, such as Docker, Podman, Ansible, Terraform or Nix, and the ability to apply these tools to both server infrastructure and networked laboratory systems.

Desirable

  • Experience designing or operating hardware-in-the-loop test environments and automated test rigs.
  • Familiarity with embedded Linux, cross-compilation toolchains, RTOS environments or FPGA development and deployment workflows.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability platforms such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana or Loki.
  • Knowledge of secure software supply-chain practices, including dependency scanning, artifact signing, software bills of materials, secrets management and vulnerability management.
  • Experience administering laboratory or industrial networks, including VLANs, VPNs, DNS, DHCP, firewalls and remote-access systems.
  • Familiarity with release, change-control or quality-management processes used for production, regulated or safety-critical systems.
  • Experience supporting on-premises servers, virtualisation platforms, backup systems and disaster-recovery procedures.
  • Previous experience working closely with multidisciplinary teams comprising software, electronics, FPGA, systems and research engineers.

Experience

  • A minimum of 4 years’ DevOps experience working with embedded devices.
  • Proven experience working with complex systems consisting of a number of networked nodes, and including embedded systems.
  • Experience with production grade systems.
  • Professional-level verbal and written communication skills, able to effectively share information with technical and non-technical staff.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or other related field, (or equivalent), or extensive experience.
  • Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) required (we will arrange for successful candidate).

Travel
Up to 10% travel, including international travel, may be required

Working conditions and Physical Requirements
Work will normally be performed in an office and laboratory environment. Able to efficiently use automated office equipment such as laptops, copiers, and printers; able to effectively engage in communications (via phone, computer, or in-person). Will involve sitting, standing, walking, lifting, and carrying up to 10 kg.

Equal Opportunity
Regardless of your interest in the quantum industry, you can take pride in the fact that Infleqtion is building an ecosystem of quantum technologies and commercial products, driving the industry towards the future. Studies reveal that while men apply for jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the requirements, women and other groups tend to apply only when they meet all the criteria. We are proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer.
