Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust as a full-time Band 6 IV Clinical Nurse Specialist. Trust. This dynamic role involves the insertion of ultrasound-guided vascular access devices for inpatients across acute settings, supporting both treatment and diagnostic pathways. You will play a key role in providing expert clinical advice, delivering IV education, and promoting excellence in intravenous practice.

The post also includes ongoing vascular access device care, service development, audit, research activities, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across the Trust. You will contribute to organisational committees and help shape the future of IV services.

As the role supports services across multiple sites within County Durham and Darlington, regular travel is required, therefore a full driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential.

Main duties of the job
Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as the Trusts expert resource for Intravenous Therapy and Ultrasound guided Vascular Access.
  • Manage a caseload of patients requiring intravenous access and treatment.
  • Insert, assess, maintain, and facilitate timely removal of vascular access devices.
  • Monitor compliance with Trust policies, standards, and documentation requirements, including VIP scoring.
  • Deliver IV therapy education and competency-based training across the organisation.
  • Support clinical audit, service evaluation, quality improvement, and research activities.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to promote safe and effective IV practice.
  • Contribute to service development and provide specialist advice to clinical teams and Trust committees.
  • Practise in accordance with the NMC Code and support the development of staff competence.


Travel regularly across County Durham and Darlington sites; a full driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential.

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic nurse to join our dynamic Intravenous (IV) Team as a full-time Clinical Nurse Specialist.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care by managing a caseload of patients requiring intravenous therapies and vascular access interventions. Working as part of a highly skilled and supportive team, you will be responsible for assessing, identifying, and managing patients requiring IV access and treatment across the Trust, both within acute hospital settings and wider clinical services. The base of the role will be at UHND but the successful candidate will be required to cover other acute sites.

The role offers a diverse and rewarding portfolio, including the ultrasound guided insertion and management of vascular access devices, education and training of healthcare professionals, monitoring and improving clinical practice, and contributing to research, innovation, and service development initiatives. You will also work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, providing expert clinical advice and guidance, while representing the service on a range of organisational groups and committees.

Qualifications

  • 1st Level Qualification NMC
  • Degree Level in Nursing

  • Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. ENB 998 or Facilitating Learning in Clinical Practice)
