Great Barr Medical Centre, Birmingham

Job summary
General practice, but better designed.

A fixed-term role. A proper clinical home.
Great Barr Medical Centre is looking for a salaried GP to join our team on a fixed-term basis until 31 March 2027.

We are particularly interested in hearing from GPs with a strong interest, experience or additional qualification in womens health.

This could include contraception, menopause, menstrual disorders, reproductive health, antenatal and postnatal care, sexual health or general gynaecology in primary care.

A relevant qualification such as DRCOG, DCSRH or DFSRH, a recognised menopause qualification, or current contraception procedure competencies would be highly desirable. However, we are equally interested in candidates who can demonstrate meaningful practical experience and a clear interest in developing this area.

What your working week may include
Your agreed job plan will include an appropriate balance of:
  • face-to-face consultations;
  • telephone and online consultations;
  • clinically led triage;
  • same-day urgent care;
  • planned general practice appointments;
  • continuity for complex and vulnerable patients;
  • clinical administration arising from your work;
  • multidisciplinary discussion;
  • clinical meetings; and
  • quality improvement or service-development activity.

Main duties of the job
We are not recruiting another appointment machine
We want a GP who believes that good general practice should involve more than working through an undifferentiated list and hoping the system holds together around them.

At Great Barr Medical Centre, we have redesigned our access, workforce and administrative models to make sure:
  • clinically urgent patients receive timely assessment;
  • routine work is planned rather than squeezed into gaps;
  • patients who need continuity receive it;
  • work is directed to the right professional;
  • avoidable administrative work does not automatically fall to a GP; and
  • clinicians have a meaningful voice in how the practice develops.

Our model combines clinically led triage, planned routine care, continuity, digital access, telephone and face-to-face consultations, structured workflow and multidisciplinary working.

About us
One practice. One team.
You will be based at Great Barr Medical Centre and work alongside:
  • GP Partners and salaried clinicians;
  • an advanced nurse practitioner;
  • a paramedic;
  • In-house pharmacy team
  • practice nurses
  • a developing multidisciplinary team; and
  • an established administrative and workflow team.

We use SystmOne and AccuRx practice, and believe in constantly developing our healthcare offer to better our patients experience.

  • Make appropriate referrals to secondary care, community services, social care, voluntary-sector services and members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Provide clear safety-netting and document clinical reasoning appropriately.
  • Complete clinical administration arising from the postholders consultations within the agreed job plan.
  • Review relevant prescriptions, results, correspondence, clinical documents and tasks allocated to the postholder.
  • Support long-term-condition management, preventative healthcare, screening and health promotion.
  • Provide continuity for patients with complex, vulnerable or high-risk needs.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to adult and child safeguarding concerns.
  • Contribute to anticipatory care planning and palliative care where appropriate.

The postholder will:
  • participate in the practices access and clinical-triage arrangements;
  • assess the urgency and appropriate disposition of patient requests;
  • provide timely assessment of clinically urgent presentations;
  • direct patients to the most appropriate clinician or service;
  • support an appropriate balance between same-day care, planned care and continuity;
  • use telephone and digital consultation methods safely;
  • ensure patients requiring reasonable adjustments are not disadvantaged;
  • provide clear clinical advice and safety-netting; and
  • contribute to evaluation and improvement of the access model.

The role will not consist exclusively of urgent or same-day care.
