Job Overview

This is a permanent vacancy and the job plan activities provided are subject to change based on service requirements. This post is a new post, to appoint a dedicated pelvic floor surgeon who is to join the current consultant in complex pelvic floor disease. There is close engagement with obstetrics, urology, GI Physiology and gynaecology surgery. The job plan has a fixed pattern over a 16‑week period and will be subject to review at 12 months. In an elective week, the post holder will usually work over 4 fixed days including operating sessions, clinic, relevant MDT meetings and endoscopy. There is allocated time to attend the Bristol wide pelvic floor MDT and for administration and supporting professional activities. The postholder will perform pelvic floor surgery (open, laparoscopic and robotic); Delorme’s procedure/Altemeiers resection and rectopexy surgery (mesh, suture). There is additional work supporting emergency surgery, benign resections and proctology procedures. There are additional opportunities to gain expertise in endometriosis surgery, mesh removal surgery, endo anal ultrasound scanning and anorectal manometry.

The appointee will be expected to work within the facilities available to the group and any new service developments are subject to the provision of necessary resources within the Trust. There is an active appraisal and development programme, and all consultant staff will take part in this process.

Main duties of the job

The colorectal surgeons work with a consultant‑led ward round model of all elective and emergency patients. as timetabled each day. We have subspecialist MDTs for colorectal cancer, complex polyps, pelvic floor, specialistic mesh removal, complex endometriosis surgery and inflammatory bowel disease. In addition there is an intestinal failure support team and abdominal wall reconstruction. It is an essential criterion that the postholder can work as part of a large team and that they can demonstrate good relations with colleagues and patients.

When on call, the on‑call consultant is responsible for reviewing patients in same day emergency care (SDEC) and acute admissions from 1pm. They are required to stay until 7pm. Consultants do an evening ward round on the day they are on call and a post take ward round at 08:00 the following day. On the day after on call, the consultant is responsible for the CEPOD list. The post holder will have no elective commitments when on‑call. The emergency take has evolved over the in both volume and complexity and the proportion of the colorectal surgical workload presenting and managed acutely has increased significantly. GI surgery provides a subspecialist upper and lower GI take with patient transfer between teams. We have a co‑located medical and surgical SDEC unit. The surgical SDEC unit includes other surgical specialties such as urology and neurosurgery.
