Job description

Protocol Education is working with a number of welcoming and inclusive schools across Bedminster who are looking for calm, reliable and supportive staff to work with pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and additional Special Educational Needs (SEN).

These roles are ideal for people who are passionate about supporting young people who may find aspects of school life challenging and need a consistent, understanding adult to help them feel safe, regulated and ready to learn.

You don’t need formal qualifications or previous school experience to be considered. Schools are very open to backgrounds such as youth work, care work, coaching, mentoring, retail, hospitality or any role where you’ve supported or worked with young people. What matters most is your attitude, resilience and ability to build positive relationships.

The Role

You’ll be supporting pupils in either mainstream classrooms, small groups, or alternative provision settings. Your focus will be on helping young people stay engaged, manage emotions and access learning in a way that works for them.

Day-to-day, you may be:

  • Supporting pupils to stay on task and complete learning activities
  • Helping to create a calm, structured and predictable environment
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with students
  • Supporting emotional regulation and behaviour using consistent approaches
  • De-escalating situations calmly and safely when needed
  • Working closely with teachers and support staff
  • Following safeguarding procedures at all times

Every day is different, and the role suits someone who can stay steady, patient and positive even when things are unpredictable.

About You

We’re looking for people who:

  • Are calm, resilient and patient
  • Can build trust and positive relationships with young people
  • Communicate clearly and confidently
  • Understand that behaviour is a form of communication
  • Are willing to learn and take guidance from school teams
  • Have a genuine interest in supporting children with SEMH/SEN needs

Experience is helpful but absolutely not essential. Many of the best staff in these roles come from completely different backgrounds.

Why Choose Protocol Education?

  • Flexible work to suit your availability
  • Weekly pay
  • Competitive daily rates of £14.25–£15.25 per hour
  • Dedicated consultants who understand SEMH and SEN settings
  • Easy booking system
  • PAYE payroll
  • £250 referral bonus for recommending a friend

What We Need to Get You Started

  • Right to work in the UK (passport or share code)
  • Two proofs of address (e.g. driving licence, utility bill, council tax letter)
  • CV covering the last 10 years of work or education, with any gaps explained
  • Two years of references (where available, including work with children or young people)
  • Overseas Police Check (OSPC) if you have lived abroad for three months or more in the last five years

If you’re someone who can offer patience, consistency and encouragement to young people who need it most, we’d love to hear from you!

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQs on the Protocol Education website for further details.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.

Protocol Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We undertake safeguarding checks on all workers in accordance with the DfE statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’, this may also include an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted applicants.
We offer FREE online safeguarding and Prevent Duty training to all our workers. All candidates must undertake or have undertaken a valid enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and subscribe to the DBS Update Service.

Full assistance provided. For details of our privacy policy, please see visit the Protocol Education website.
