Transport Coordinator

Permanent, Full Time

£37,614 to £44,251 per annum

Location: Chelmsford

Working Style: Fixed-base worker

We're looking for an organised and proactive individual to coordinate transport operations across Essex's Recycling Centres for Household Waste (RCHWs). You'll be responsible for planning vehicle routes, managing driver rotas across a seven-day operation, and maintaining fleet and driver records to ensure compliance with Essex County Council policies and operator licence requirements.

Working closely with the Transport Manager, you'll help ensure materials are transported efficiently to disposal and reprocessing facilities. You'll also support transport compliance and act as the designated TM2 in the Transport Manager's absence.

The role includes line management responsibility for a team of drivers, overseeing daily operations, resource allocation, safety, training, and vehicle maintenance planning in partnership with administration teams.

Accountabilities

  • Lead on vehicle routing and ensure that staffing rotas are optimised to minimise road miles and driver hours. Responsible for forecasting of haulage servicing requirements for weekends, bank holidays and other peak periods.
  • Line management responsibility for drivers including personal development and all other aspects of people management. Undertake daily driver debriefs, toolbox talks and periodic gate checks.
  • Liaison with RCHW managers, WTS Supervisors, operational staff and drivers to ensure an efficient service which is cost effective and minimises disruption.
  • Assist and support the Transport and Plant Manager to keep statutory compliance files up to date and in accordance with ECC and operating licence requirements.
  • Daily monitoring of the defect reports, near miss or accident reporting. Assisting with accident/investigations through technical knowledge. Managing breakdowns/punctures and liaise with maintenance providers as required. And if qualified be able /required to take Lorries for their 6 weekly inspections and Mot`s.
  • Assist in the production of annual budgets and monitoring, managing and monitor tachograph usage, fuel purchases and usage.
  • Support the development of fleet maintenance calendar to ensure existing routing is not adversely affected.
  • To carry out any other duties commensurate with the post as required to meet the needs of the service.

The Experience You Will Bring

  • Minimum GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths or suitable experience.
  • CPC level 3 (Certificate of Professional Competence for Transport Managers) is desirable but not essential as training will be given.
  • Good sound knowledge of waste transport operations including all legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Resilient, able to absorb pressure and respond positively. Ability to prioritise workload is essential. Fleet compliance and logistic planning experience within waste industry is also required.
  • Good communication, interpersonal and people management skills, professional, confident, flexible and positive. Strong work ethic.
  • Weekend working on a rota is essential to ensure a 7-day operation is maintained.

Please note that the job role requires you to be mobile throughout an operational area. Therefore, the post holder will need to have a driving licence and access to a vehicle, or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means.
