Job description

Job summary
Devon Partnership NHS Trust is seeking an ambitious and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist to join Salus Ward, a newly developed 16-bed mixed-gender acute inpatient unit for adults of working age. This is an exciting opportunity to provide senior clinical leadership within a modern, purpose-built environment designed to support recovery, safety and high-quality care.

As Consultant Psychiatrist and Responsible Clinician, you will provide expert clinical leadership for patients admitted to Salus Ward, including those receiving informal care and those detained under the Mental Health Act.

Lead assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning and risk management for adults experiencing acute mental health difficulties.

Provide visible consultant leadership across inpatient and urgent care pathways, supporting timely, patient-centred decision-making.

Work collaboratively with community teams, home treatment services and inpatient colleagues to support safe flow and effective discharge planning.

Share Responsible Clinician duties with a Multi-Professional Approved Clinician, with RC responsibilities split pro rata.

Contribute to the local consultant on-call rota, with cross-cover from consultant colleagues across the area.

Support and supervise two junior doctors dedicated to the ward, contributing to a positive learning culture.

If you are ready to bring your expertise, leadership and ambition to a forward-thinking inpatient service, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Main duties of the job
We welcome applications from experienced consultants, doctors approaching their first NHS consultant post, international candidates and postretirement consultants seeking a rewarding clinical role. Experience in adult acute inpatient care is valued, but we also welcome psychiatrists from related specialties who bring strong clinical judgement, leadership and a commitment to excellent patient care.

Approved Clinician status is preferred but not essential, with support available for overseas candidates working towards approval. The role includes 2.5 SPAs (10 hours per week) for professional development. You will benefit from strong peer support through monthly peer groups, quarterly medical advisory committees and postgraduate meetings.

This post offers the chance to grow your consultant career within a supportive medical workforce while enjoying the lifestyle benefits of South Devon. You will lead meaningful clinical change in acute adult mental health care, supported by committed multidisciplinary colleagues and dedicated junior medical staff. Additional PAs can be negotiated for teaching, research, innovation, medical management or service development. Devon offers coast, countryside, Dartmoor and vibrant communities, supporting excellent work-life balance. Flexible working conversations, including potential hybrid working, are welcomed.
