Job Summary
Join our Pharmacy Technical and Cancer Services team and help shape the future of cancer pharmacy at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

We are looking for an experienced, motivated, enthusiastic and quality focused pharmacist who is passionate about delivering safe, innovative and patient-centred cancer and technical services.

As a Senior Technical/Cancer Services Pharmacist, you will play a key role in delivering and developing high-quality technical and cancer services.

You will support clinical screening, act as a Releasing Officer for pharmaceutical products compounded under the Manufacturer's Specials Licence, and contribute to the Pharmaceutical Quality System to ensure product quality, regulatory compliance and patient safety.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will provide expert clinical and technical advice, lead service development and quality improvement initiatives, contribute to governance activities, and help ensure the safe, effective and efficient use of medicines across Cancer Services.

This is a full-time, permanent position based primarily at Watford General Hospital. Participation in weekend, bank holiday and emergency duty rotas will be required. Full details will be discussed at interview.

Main duties of the job
You will provide specialist clinical and technical pharmacy support to Haematology and Oncology services while contributing to the leadership and development of Technical and Cancer Services.

Your responsibilities will include supporting aseptic chemotherapy services, maintaining pharmaceutical quality systems, ensuring compliance with GMP, MHRA regulation and NHS standards, supervising and developing pharmacy staff, participating in clinical governance, audits and research, and supporting electronic chemotherapy prescribing systems.

You will work closely with consultants, nurses, pharmacists and multidisciplinary teams to optimise patient care, improve medicines safety and deliver innovative cancer pharmacy services. You will also contribute to education, training and service improvement projects while supporting the strategic development of Pharmacy Technical and Cancer Services.

The post holder must be a registered pharmacist and either hold or be working towards a Diploma in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent.

Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide clinical, technical and operational leadership within Pharmacy Technical and Cancer Services.

Responsibilities include delivering specialist pharmacy services to Oncology and Haematology, supporting aseptic production (releasing), supervising pharmacy staff, participating in multidisciplinary meetings, contributing to quality assurance, governance, audits, research and service development, and ensuring compliance with medicines legislation and national quality standards.

The role also supports the management of electronic chemotherapy prescribing systems and the implementation of new cancer therapies and service improvements.

Person Specification
Education and qualifications:
Essential

  • MPharm (or equivalent overseas degree).
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Certificate in Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent).


Desirable

  • MSc/Diploma in Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent).
  • Pharmacist Non-Medical prescriber.
  • Post graduate training in the Preparative/Production services.


Knowledge:
Essential

  • Technical and practical knowledge of GMP.
  • Prescription Monitoring.
  • Computer and IT Literate.
  • Knowledge of economics of healthcare.
  • Understanding the role of the MHRA.
  • Understanding of licensing regulations and their application to hospital.
  • Understanding of clinical trials.
  • Legislation governing Clinical Trials.
  • Up to date knowledge of national pharmacy issues.
  • NHS organisational structure.
  • Health and Safety.
  • Critical appraisal skills.
  • Preparation of written reports and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of safe pharmacy practice including Medicines legislation and professional code of ethics.
  • Demonstrates the ability to lead and work within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the needs of patients with relation to the provision of information on safe effective medicines use.
  • An understanding of clinical governance and the role of the pharmacist in the clinical governance agenda.


Desirable

  • Well-developed therapeutic and clinical pharmacy knowledge in appropriate areas.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of quality risk management.
  • Knowledge of clinical oncology or haematology.


Experience:
Essential

  • Post registration experience as a hospital pharmacist providing a pharmacy service to oncology and haematology patients.
  • Experience within a range of specialties, including technical services.
  • Experience in providing clinical services to cancer patients.
  • Clinical Trials/GCP.
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Evidence of clinical audit, practice research, implementation of procedures and protocols.
  • Experience in utilising information technology within the workplace including inputting, retrieving information and producing reports.
  • Experience of ChemoCare or other chemotherapy electronic prescribing system.


Desirable

  • Experience in technical pharmacy production in pharmaceutical industry or hospital setting.
  • Experience of successfully leading and implementing service improvement and change projects.
  • Training Pre-registration Pharmacists and Junior Pharmacy Staff.
