Job description

Are you an experienced Full Stack Java / J2EE Developer looking for a role where your work will make a visible difference?

At Castelan, we're entering an exciting phase of growth, digital transformation, and innovation. As a trusted furniture care, repair, and warranties organisation working with independent retailers and major UK national brands, our technology platforms play a vital role in supporting our customers, partners, and internal teams.

We are looking for an experienced Full Stack Java / J2EE Developer with a minimum of four years' hands-on commercial development experience. This is not an entry-level or graduate position; we are looking for someone who can confidently contribute from day one across both front-end and back-end development.

Why join us?

This is a fantastic opportunity to take ownership of meaningful development projects across the full software lifecycle - from requirements analysis and solution design through to development, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement. You'll work on business-critical systems, cloud-based solutions, integrations, and scalable digital platforms in a collaborative environment where your technical input will be valued.

You will bring at least four years' hands-on commercial Java / J2EE development experience, ideally gained in a fast-paced business environment. This role is suited to an established developer rather than a recent graduate or entry-level candidate. If you're looking for a role that offers variety, responsibility, and the chance to broaden your technical exposure as Castelan continues to evolve its digital landscape, this could be the next step for you.

What you'll be doing

In this role, you'll:

  • Design, build, enhance, and maintain Java and J2EE applications that support key business processes
  • Work across front-end and back-end technologies as part of varied development projects
  • Contribute to solution design, technical discussions, peer reviews, and application walkthroughs
  • Support system integrations, APIs, cloud-based platforms, and connected digital solutions
  • Help resolve production issues and deliver robust, reliable fixes
  • Create clear technical documentation to support handover, knowledge sharing, and long-term support
  • Contribute to build, deployment, release, and continuous improvement practices
  • Work with stakeholders and internal teams to understand requirements and recommend practical technical solutions

What we're looking for

You'll bring:

  • Minimum four years' commercial experience delivering Java / J2EE development projects across both front-end and back-end technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of J2EE, RESTful Web Services, and frameworks such as Struts
  • Experience across both front-end and back-end development
  • Good understanding of unit, integration, system, and regression testing
  • Confidence using tools such as Git, SVN, and Eclipse
  • A practical, collaborative approach to problem solving
  • A genuine interest in modern development practices, new technologies, and continuous improvement
  • Experience with any of the following would also be beneficial:
  • Docker or Kubernetes
  • UNIX/Linux environments
  • Build, configuration, and release management
  • APIs and system integrations
  • Cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure
  • Additional languages such as C++, Python, Perl, or JavaScript

What's in it for you?

Salary: £38,000-£41,000 depending on experience

Location: Hybrid working, with the ability to commute to work as required.

Alongside a competitive salary and pension, you'll enjoy a range of benefits including:

  • 24/7 GP access for you and your household
  • Discounts on cinema tickets, major retailers, and national brands
  • Career development and progression opportunities
  • Employee of the Month awards and celebratory events
  • On-site Mental Health First Aid support
  • Staff socials, wellbeing initiatives, and charity fundraising
  • Free on-site parking, location dependent, and excellent transport links
  • Employee Assistance Programme for counselling, financial, and legal support
  • First week's lunches covered by the business via our local catering partner

Ready to build what's next with us?

If you're a motivated Full Stack Java / J2EE Developer who wants to work on meaningful systems, contribute ideas, and be part of a business investing in digital transformation, we'd love to hear from you. Please note: this role requires a minimum of four years' relevant commercial development experience and is not suitable for recent graduates or candidates seeking their first developer role.

Please send your CV and cover letter to recruitment@castelangroup.com or apply through our careers page/jobs board partners by Tuesday 25 August 2026.

Additional Information: We operate a Preferred Supplier List (PSL) for recruitment agencies. As such, we do not accept unsolicited CVs or candidate submissions from agencies that are not part of our approved PSL.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide sponsorship for applicants who require a visa to work in the UK. Therefore, applicants must already have the right to work in the UK at the time of application.

Please note that only applications that fully meet the essential criteria outlined in this advert will be progressed to the next stage of the recruitment process. Applications that do not meet the specified requirements will not be shortlisted.
