Job summary
We are delighted to offer an exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced and motivated Consultant Obstetrician to lead our Outpatient Clinics and Assessment Services. This high-impact role sits at the heart of our maternity service and offers the chance to shape, innovate, and deliver outstanding care for women and families.

The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership across outpatient and assessment pathways, driving service development, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary collaboration in line with national standards and NHS priorities. This post combines senior clinical practice with meaningful leadership influence in a supportive and forward-looking team.

Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for the planning, delivery, development and improvement of outpatient and assessment services (antenatal, pregnancy assessment unit/ triage areas) together with providing a high-quality Obstetrics service including on-call out of hours, in conjunction with consultant colleagues and a multi-disciplinary team. There is flexibility within the department to accommodate the skills of the successful candidate. You will also be required to:
  • Participate in teaching, examination and appraisal duties
  • Bring experience to clinical diagnosis and effective multidisciplinary team-working
  • Develop and implement standards of obstetric & gynaecological practice and have a major role in developing specific pathways, guidelines and risk management including maintaining and developing the risk for inpatient services
  • Audit the effectiveness of practice and develop and modify, as required
  • Train and educate staff in a multidisciplinary team
  • Provide clinical leadership, leading by example

Job responsibilities
The role on offer is for a 10 PA contract with 1 Additional PA for the Lead role. There is also the opportunity for additional programmed activity subject to job planning. It will include 1:10 on-call commitment.

You will be responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to and training of your staff.

You will take an active role in Clinical Governance, lead and participate in audit projects relevant to your clinical interests and promote research and academic activity within the specialty to help ensure our services are continuously being improved.

Responsible for the professional supervision, training and management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and CPD activity locally and nationally as appropriate.

You will lead on the inpatient antenatal and postnatal services.

It is essential for applicants for substantive Consultant posts to be either on the GMC Specialist Register, or be within six months of their CCT date at the interview date

Qualifications & Eligibility
Essential
  • MRCOG or appropriate specialist qualification
  • Possession of relevant Postgraduate Qualification or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of application
  • GMC Specialist Register for Obstetrics Specialty OR within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview OR If applying for Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice simultaneously with a Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) application, supporting documentary evidence must be provided at interview, to confirm an application has been submitted & is under consideration by the GMC.
  • Any of the following ATSM or equivalent SSM/ SST/SITMs: ATSM in Advance Labour ward ?ATSM in High-Risk Pregnancy ?ATSM Maternal Medicine, Fetal Care (FC), pregnancy Care (PC)

Desirable
  • Additional higher medical / scientific degree relevant to the specialty
  • SITM in Therapeutic Hysteroscopy

Clinical Experience
Essential
  • Experience of working as a ST7 and above in the NHS
  • A minimum 24 months experience working in a United Kingdom Health Care setting
  • Extensive general obstetric experience-demonstrable competence in the management of low and high-risk obstetric people; Labour ward and emergency obstetric care
  • Experience in diagnostic and outpatient hysteroscopy, including the investigation of abnormal uterine bleeding.

Desirable
  • Experience leading Caesarean Section quality improvement programmes and clinical audits.
  • Experience of maternity pathway redesign and service transformation.

Management & Administrative Experience
Essential
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development & the requirements of clinical governance.
  • Experience of formal presentations

Desirable
  • Attended a management course for consultants.

Teaching, Audit & Research
Essential
  • Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduates
  • Experience of supervising F1, F2, ST trainees.
  • Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills
  • Experience of & commitment to clinical audit
  • Experience of supervising F1, F2, ST trainees.
  • Ability to & experience of teaching clinical skills

Desirable
  • Specific teaching qualification
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
