Job description
About the job: With excellent customer service at the heart of everything we do, our Technician Apprenticeship Scheme will develop the next generation of technicians to work in our world-class research centres, laboratories, and workshops, supporting the research and teaching we deliver. Our technicians will work with academic/research and administrative staff, and students, to maintain the highest standard of delivery. The School of Psychology, of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, is offering an exciting opportunity to join Queen's University as an Apprentice IT Technician. As an Apprentice IT Technician, you will join an established IT team within the School, supporting a diverse range of teaching, administrative, and research computing systems. Throughout the apprenticeship, you will develop the skills, knowledge, and practical experience required to assist in the delivery of frontline IT support, maintenance of core systems, and support for specialised research technologies. Over time, you will build the capability to operate independently and progress to fully performing the role of IT Technician within the School. In partnership with Belfast Metropolitan College, learning and development will include on-job-training, mentoring and the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification Level 3 Networking Infrastructure (BTEC Level 3 diploma in Professional Competence for IT Professionals and OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in IT). Enrolment and meeting the College requirements for the relevant course/qualification will be required; further guidance will be given to successful applicants. On completion of the Level 3 apprenticeship there may be the opportunity to progress to a higher level apprenticeship. Please note Apprenticeships are designed to develop new knowledge and skills at a higher level than you already have, or in a new vocational area. So, you will not be eligible to apply if you already hold the same, similar or higher qualification in the vocational area of the apprenticeship. The successful candidate must be able to start by 2 November 2026 in order to commence the college-based qualification/study element of the apprenticeship. About the person: We are looking for someone with a passion for IT and the ability to deliver excellent technical support to join an established, dynamic, and friendly team. Applications will be shortlisted against the following criteria. Candidates must meet the essential criteria, and if applicable preference will be given where some or all of the desirable criteria is met. Essential Criteria: Hold a minimum of 5 GCSEs, A*-C (9-4) or equivalent (e.g. NVQ Level 2), including Maths, English, and a scientific subject. Demonstrable knowledge and interest in IT software and hardware Knowledge of working to relevant regulations and procedures, including health and safety requirements. Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively with with internal/external stakeholders. This is not an exhaustive list.
