Job description

Support Your Local Community as a Sorting Assistant Volunteer

Every donation received by Ashgate Hospice has the potential to help fund specialist hospice care for local people and those important to them. As a Sorting Assistant Volunteer, you'll play an important behind-the-scenes role in making sure donated items are prepared, organised and ready for sale in our charity shops.

You'll become part of a friendly team working together to turn generous donations into vital income. Whether you enjoy organising, checking quality, preparing stock or simply like keeping things neat and tidy, we'll provide all the training and support you need. No previous experience is necessary – just enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to get involved.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Sorting Assistant Volunteer, you may support with a range of activities, including:

  • Sorting and preparing donated items ready for sale
  • Checking the quality of donations and identifying suitable stock
  • Pricing items and attaching labels
  • Organising clothing, books, bric-a-brac, accessories and other donated items into categories
  • Steaming, folding and hanging clothing
  • Helping to keep the sorting area clean, tidy and well organised
  • Rotating stock and preparing items ready for the shop floor
  • Supporting general back-room activities, including organising, recycling and waste sorting

We'll work with you to make sure you're comfortable and confident in the tasks you undertake.

Time Commitment

  • Flexible volunteering to fit around your availability
  • Flexible shifts arranged with you
  • Ideally one morning or afternoon each week (even a few hours can make a real difference)

Who We’re Looking For

We'd love to hear from you if you:

  • Enjoy being part of a friendly and supportive team
  • Have a good eye for detail and enjoy organising things
  • Are reliable and able to offer a regular volunteering commitment where possible
  • Will let us know if you're unable to attend a planned volunteering session
  • Are happy to represent Ashgate Hospice positively, even in a behind-the-scenes role
  • Are willing to complete the required training and follow our policies and procedures
  • Share our values of compassion, teamwork, respect and inclusion

No previous experience is required, as full training and ongoing support will be provided.

What’s in It for You?

By volunteering with Ashgate Hospice, you'll benefit from:

  • The opportunity to make a real difference to local people and families
  • The chance to gain new skills and experience within a friendly and supportive team
  • Full training and ongoing support to help you succeed in your role
  • The opportunity to build confidence and meet new people
  • Reasonable travel expenses reimbursed in line with our Volunteer Expenses Policy
  • The satisfaction of supporting your local hospice and being part of your community

What You Can Expect from Us

As one of our valued volunteers, you can expect:

  • To be treated fairly, respectfully and in line with our hospice values
  • A clear understanding of your role and responsibilities
  • Appropriate training and induction for your volunteering role
  • Ongoing guidance, encouragement and support
  • The resources and equipment you need to volunteer safely
  • A welcoming, inclusive and safe volunteering environment

What We Ask in Return

We ask our volunteers to:

  • Represent the values and aims of Ashgate Hospice
  • Support our mission of providing outstanding care for local people and those important to them
  • Follow our Volunteer Policy, Code of Behaviour, Health and Safety Policy and Volunteer Handbook
  • Complete any training relevant to your volunteering role
  • Ask for support whenever you need it
  • Carry out your volunteering safely, responsibly and respectfully

Join our team and help make every donation, every purchase and every conversation count.

Important Information

  • Volunteers must be aged 14 or over
  • All volunteers are required to attend:
    • Voluntary Statutory Training (3 hours)
    • Ashgate Hospice Volunteer Induction (3 hours)
  • Local role-specific training will be provided
  • Confidentiality around patient and hospice information is essential

Interested?

Please apply via our website and feel free to attach your CV or supporting information to tell us more about you and the knowledge, skills and experience you can bring.
