Barhale is a business founded on family values, having been established by our Chairman, Dennis Curran, in 1980. We are one of the largest privately owned civil engineering and infrastructure specialists in the UK, with over 40 years of experience in providing design, civil engineering and maintenance services working across multiple sectors, including:

We operate as a tier one partner for blue chip, regulated and private clients, working as part of large frameworks, joint ventures and alliances, as well as on individual standalone projects, developing long-term relationships based on delivering to the Barhale values which have been integral to our business since their inception in 1985.


Our direct delivery model is at the core of everything we do, as we believe that people are our greatest asset. Therefore, we robustly source, train and retain all our own frontline delivery teams as well as management and support services. We employ over 1,200 employees nationwide.

The Role


Were the @one Alliance a ground-breaking collaboration between Anglian Water and seven industry-leading partners: Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, MMB, MWH Treatment, Skanska and SWECO. Together we're delivering one of the UK's largest and most ambitious infrastructure investment programmes.

We're transforming the region's water and wastewater networks to provide resilient services, enable sustainable growth and leave the environment in a better state for future generations.

This is an opportunity to play a leading role in one of the UK's most significant infrastructure programmes.

You'll help deliver projects that improve the environment, support sustainable communities and ensure future generations have resilient water supplies, while leading an exceptional commercial function at the heart of a unique alliance model.

Key Responsibilities



  • Develop and deliver the Alliance's commercial strategy, ensuring commercial performance consistently exceeds expectations.


Lead the commercial, estimating and contract management functions, building a high performing, collaborative and values led team.


Provide strategic commercial advice to the Executive Leadership Team and Board, supporting key business decisions.


Establish robust commercial governance, assurance and reporting frameworks.


Lead contract management across complex NEC-based programmes, ensuring effective management of risk, change, claims and contractual obligations.


Drive commercial performance through effective cost management, forecasting, value engineering and financial controls.


Build exceptional relationships with Anglian Water, Alliance partners and the wider supply chain to deliver better outcomes together.


Lead the development of resilient, sustainable and high performing supply chain strategies.


Champion innovation, digital commercial practices and continuous improvement across the commercial function.


Foster an inclusive culture where people can thrive, develop and perform at their best.



About you


Essential



  • Significant senior commercial leadership experience delivering major infrastructure programmes valued at hundreds of millions of pounds or more.


A proven track record of leading commercial strategy within complex engineering, utilities, infrastructure or construction environments.


Extensive experience of NEC contracts and commercial management across large capital programmes.


Strong knowledge of procurement, contract administration, commercial governance and risk management.


Experience operating within regulated environments and delivering successful commercial outcomes through collaborative delivery models.


Outstanding stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence at Executive, Board and partner level.


A degree (or equivalent experience) in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Finance, Engineering or a related discipline.


A professional membership with a recognised institution such as RICS, CIOB or CICES (or equivalent).
